We couldn't wait any longer despite the weather so my SO partner and I went out to the desert on a cold, windy, rain squally day to try out our new acquisitions:
First, were Ruger Mini 30s which I'd recently ordered for both of us. What can I say but they were superb! I had Russian steel case AK47 ammo and they shot it like a dream. Function was flawless and accuracy was all that could be desired.
Second, was the Ruger 'Hawkeye' I ordered for myself also in 7.62x39. Wow! I was impressed. This is a really small bolt action rifle with the top insert integral magazine and the drop floorplate to unload. It holds five rounds topped up and comes sightless. I had an old Weaver four power in my safe so I mounted it on the Hawkeye. As almost always with a Ruger and their integral sight mounts, it was almost dead on with no previous bore sighting. Function was flawless and the trigger pull was smooth and really nice at about 4 lbs. Another keeper.
Third, was a Taurus 145. This is their concealable mini pistol but in full up 45 ACP and holds 11 rounds with 10 in the mag and one in the chamber. I plan to carry this on plain clothes duty and was concerned, of course, about feed and function. I started out with radical HP rounds. It 'ate' them all without a hitch. As many of you know, other than standard roundnose bullets can be a problem with 45s. Not so with the little Taurus. I have to say it's accuracy was erratic at 100 plus yards with it's very short barrel. But at 50 yards and under it was dead on. Definitely a keeper and now that I have confindence in its function, a pistol I will carry with confidence.
Fourth. My recently acquired HK standard 45. What can I say? This, IMO, is the jewel of 45 autos, and this from an old guy who has shot, smithed, customized, and competition shot myriad 45s of all makes for a lot of years. The HK just plain shoots! It has an amazingly 'mild' pull on double action and a silky smooth, about 3.5 lb pull on single. It's big three dot sights bring you right on and it puts them where you aim them. I've tried every type of ammo through this German beast and it has yet to fail, stovepipe, or anything else but shoot! This is one I'll keep until I croak! BTW, the HK sights are also 'rechargeable' night sights. One minute of bright light gives you two hours or more of 'glow.'
Fifth, was the new S&W, heavy frame, six inch barrel revolver in 10 mm and 40. Wow! Impressive at long range with the 10mm and also somewhat closer in with the 40s. It might surprise many to discover what a 40 can do through a six inch barrel. As with most any S&W revolver, a superbly made firearm with a silky trigger and right on out of the box. I have no particular reason for buying one of these other than I wanted it. Now, it will definitely NOT be a safe queen. I do love high quality revolvers and have for 60 plus years. Argue wheel guns versus pistols all you want but give me 'the old time religion' of revolvers when it comes to longer range, accuracy, and ultimate dependability. Okay, usually only six rounds, but when it's a shootout across a parking lot I want my S&W 41 mag, my usual uniform carry gun, anytime. It will zing across a 100 yard plus parking lot, go through both doors of a sedan, and hurt you bad on the back side.
