We couldn't wait any longer despite the weather so my SO partner and I went out to the desert on a cold, windy, rain squally day to try out our new acquisitions:

First, were Ruger Mini 30s which I'd recently ordered for both of us. What can I say but they were superb! I had Russian steel case AK47 ammo and they shot it like a dream. Function was flawless and accuracy was all that could be desired.

Second, was the Ruger 'Hawkeye' I ordered for myself also in 7.62x39. Wow! I was impressed. This is a really small bolt action rifle with the top insert integral magazine and the drop floorplate to unload. It holds five rounds topped up and comes sightless. I had an old Weaver four power in my safe so I mounted it on the Hawkeye. As almost always with a Ruger and their integral sight mounts, it was almost dead on with no previous bore sighting. Function was flawless and the trigger pull was smooth and really nice at about 4 lbs. Another keeper.

Third, was a Taurus 145. This is their concealable mini pistol but in full up 45 ACP and holds 11 rounds with 10 in the mag and one in the chamber. I plan to carry this on plain clothes duty and was concerned, of course, about feed and function. I started out with radical HP rounds. It 'ate' them all without a hitch. As many of you know, other than standard roundnose bullets can be a problem with 45s. Not so with the little Taurus. I have to say it's accuracy was erratic at 100 plus yards with it's very short barrel. But at 50 yards and under it was dead on. Definitely a keeper and now that I have confindence in its function, a pistol I will carry with confidence.

Fourth. My recently acquired HK standard 45. What can I say? This, IMO, is the jewel of 45 autos, and this from an old guy who has shot, smithed, customized, and competition shot myriad 45s of all makes for a lot of years. The HK just plain shoots! It has an amazingly 'mild' pull on double action and a silky smooth, about 3.5 lb pull on single. It's big three dot sights bring you right on and it puts them where you aim them. I've tried every type of ammo through this German beast and it has yet to fail, stovepipe, or anything else but shoot! This is one I'll keep until I croak! BTW, the HK sights are also 'rechargeable' night sights. One minute of bright light gives you two hours or more of 'glow.'

Fifth, was the new S&W, heavy frame, six inch barrel revolver in 10 mm and 40. Wow! Impressive at long range with the 10mm and also somewhat closer in with the 40s. It might surprise many to discover what a 40 can do through a six inch barrel. As with most any S&W revolver, a superbly made firearm with a silky trigger and right on out of the box. I have no particular reason for buying one of these other than I wanted it. Now, it will definitely NOT be a safe queen. I do love high quality revolvers and have for 60 plus years. Argue wheel guns versus pistols all you want but give me 'the old time religion' of revolvers when it comes to longer range, accuracy, and ultimate dependability. Okay, usually only six rounds, but when it's a shootout across a parking lot I want my S&W 41 mag, my usual uniform carry gun, anytime. It will zing across a 100 yard plus parking lot, go through both doors of a sedan, and hurt you bad on the back side.

PICTURES?!?!?!?!?!

I have wanted to pick up one of the S&W 10mm/40.s for a long time. They are some great looking guns and the round performance makes them very appealing..
Thanks for the reviews.

You can get mepro night sights at CDNN for the HK 45 for $50. I am putting them on my P30 and plan to get an HK 45 soon.

What kind of groups were you getting on the Mini 30s? I heard that they've improved the accuracy substantially in the last couple years.

Thanks,

It was a cold and windy/rainy day so no targets up but was potting standard tin cans every shot at about 100 yards.

DWK2, as for nice toys---yes. I have a little left over each month and I know zero about gold. So I said to myself, 'self, what in hell do you know something about to invest in? The answer was a bit about guns so why not buy a quality gun a month since they ain't gone down in price in a long time. Since I can buy at dealer prices, why not?

BTW, for gun owners, Mayor Bloomberg of New York just sent a long winded message to Obama encouraging him to use his executive powers to crack down on guns of all types. Get your cast iron jockey shorts on, guys, or have the vasilene handy.....

Revolvers in rimless cartridges ?? Bizarre !! Much more sense is a .41 or 44 !

Rimless cartridges in revolvers have a long history.

S&W M1917 - .45 ACP
S&W M547 - 9mmP
S&W M940 - 9mmP
S&W M610 - .40 S&W/10mm

Not a complete list - and that doesn't include revolvers made by Colt, Ruger and a number of foreign manufactures, or any prototype revolvers that were chambered for a variety of rimless cartridges.

TR Graham, I have an old Ruger three screw 45 Colt with the additional cylinder for 45 ACP. It's a great shooter and has been a favorite for many years. I believe Ruger still makes these along with a Blackhawk in 38/357 with an extra cylinder for 9mm.

I also have a Blackhawk in 30 Carbine which is a sweet shooter. I load 40 grain 223 bullets in the 30 Carbine cases for this bear using sabots and chrono a bit over 3100 fps, from a revolver! It's nasty coyote medicine out to 300 yards or more.

Heh-heh... I am remembering back when I was a kid, borrowing my Dad's .30 Carbine Blackhawk and shooting surplus government ammo he had bought cheap by the case....my ears ring to this day...

In addition to the 'toys' listed in this thread, also recently bought:
A Saiga 12 Gauge that takes 12 round mags.
Two Marlin 45-70s, a 26 inch CB and a 24 inch Stainless XLR
One Brit/Indian SMLE in 308 with 12 round capacity
A nice Yugo AK-47
A Kel-Tec so-called 'handgun' in 223, accepts AR-15/M-16 mags
Two Taurus concealable 45s, a 745 and a 145
One Kahr PM 40
An old but good condition Savage bolt action 30-30
A Chinese short barrel 'coach' double gun with hammers in 12 gauge
A Taurus 'CIA' model 357 short barrel revolver with shrouded hammer
Polish P64 Makarov caliber (9x18), a really nice little auto
A Ruger high cap 9mm, had plenty of ammo but no pistol so chose a Ruger
A little Colt (Astra) pocket 25. Worthless but cute
A 1974 Marlin bolt action 22, sweet rifle and a tack driver
One silenced Gamo air rifle, good gopher medicine at 1200 fps

Some stuff I already had for years:
S&W 44 and 41 mags, one 625, plus 357s and 38s, no S&W autos
Ruger handguns out the kazoo from 22 through 44 mag
Ruger rifles from 22 through 7 mag
TWO BFR 45-70 five shot revolvers with 10 inch barrels
Mossberg shotguns, mostly tactical pumps
Colt and Springfield 45s from National Match through V-16s
Winchester rifles
SKS rifle
Others I can't even recall at the moment
Some weird foreign handguns, etc.

Add in a ton or two of reloading and gunsmithing equipment/tools, archery stuff, blowguns, many knives, chronographs, and other junk and my heirs will have a ball (or a bitch) sorting it all out. BTW, reloading dies and so on for EVERY centerfire caliber I own plus bullet molds for all calibers except high velocity rifles. I just hope my shop/garage never catches fire, you'll hear the bang 50 miles away. Oh well, there are warning signs posted for first responders.

Damn! No wonder my vault is crammed. Ah well, as the man said, one can never have too many guns. Right? The ones listed just join the many others already there. Okay, so I'm gun poor. At my age, who cares? I'm an old widower with no debts and simple tastes except when it comes to firearms. There, if I want it and can scrape up the bucks, I buy it.
