Hey,

I'm pretty new to the realm of knives. I recently purchased said knife in the title. The blade is a combo-edge made of 154CM steel. What do I need to know with regards to maintenance, particularly sharpening? I have never sharpened a knife before, so what are the important things I need to know? I probably want to practice on some cheaper knife before I try anything on my Cub II.

Benchmade has an oil that sparingly can be used on the pivot joint. As far as sharpening, there are many ways. I would look at the Maintenance threads, many things to learn. You tube will demonstrate many ways to sharpen. Welcome to BF.

Welcome to BF.com, you've come to a great place to learn how to sharpen. Nice knife by the way. First, how do you want to go about sharpening? If you want to stay traditional you will need lots of practice but you will have lots of fun (and frustration) along the way. There are a lot of systems too that can make sharpening easier (Spyderco Sharpmaker is the favorite around here).

As far as rust prevention, 154cm is great stuff and should require little care if you wipe it off after using it.

I do find that 154cm is a bit harder to sharpen thus taking more time, but does take a good edge. The sharpmaker is a good place to start if you're new to sharpening.

Thanks for the welcome and suggestions. I'm researching the Sharpmaker right now and looking at a number of videos and texts on how to use it.

Make sure you pick up the daimond rods with it, or else it'll be a bastard fixing really dull, or chipped edges.

Nim cub is a fixed blade.

If you're new to sharpening pick up a few cheap knives, don't pay more than a dollar or two.

secondly I'll say practice practice practice, freehand I can barely get a razor edge.

If you get interested in sharpening there are some pretty cheap setups like belt grinders, lansky and sharpmaker.

Bench stones. natural, man made and diamond plate.

after that I think it's paper wheels, wicked edge, edge pro.

Definitely take your time, "slow is fast".
