Recessed pins

I have a question about recessed pins. I've seen quite a few of these on both brand new knives and older knives. These examples have occurred on plastic/delrin, bone and wood handled knives. Is this intentional or just the scale material settling/expanding? I don't have any pics handy. Of course, this is preferable to pins sticking out, but I am afraid of eventual breaking or scales falling off. Excuse me if this is stupid question.

I'd love to know why GEC sinks many of their pins, it drives me crazy.

Regards

Robin

Just a guess, but it seems like they have a standard length pin for a pattern, and if it goes a little deep because of a thicker scale, then so be it. As long as both mark and pile side are similar depth it doesn't bother me. It would concern me if the pin were much deeper on one side than the other, having possibly moved. To me, perfection is a slightly proud domed pin as found on the best customs.

I think you're pretty much right Jeff but you lost me when you said; "To me, perfection is a slightly proud domed pin as found on the best customs." That's just it - GEC knives are not custom knives. It seems to me the deepest, sunken, pins are on knives with stag covers.

To me, sunken pins are not a problem.

I actually kinda like how they look, but just figured that it might lead to problems down the road. As long as it has no bearing on handle scales cracking/moving etc, that's fine.

yep they look ugly, but i suppose its more comfortable than proud pins rubbing your hand : D
