Well, they are bigger and heavier.
They are cheaper to run.
They tend not to remain as brilliant white as the Lithium models, but these rechargeables are used in different ways.
The 10X is the most powerful handheld flashlight ever. Staggering, awesome. It's a long runtime duty flashlight and a floodlight of amazing output when you need it.
The 9AN is solid, very nice bright round beam - white and pure.
Also has a low output secondary beam for map reading and form filling etc.
The 8AX is also solid, but the beam is usually more broad.
Lacks some of the features of the 9AN such as a LockOut TailCap.
The 8NX is very tough, light-weight and in yellow, easy to locate.
The KT5 for the 8AX/8NX produces a very tight round beam of white light for longer range illumination. I am very impressed with it.
The Classic 9NT has about the tightest, roundest, brightest whitest beam of any flashlight ever. But it's discontinued.
The 9AN+KT3 produces a tight beam from a tough compact flashlight. Whilst being feature rich, and easier to carry compared to the 9NT it replaces, I prefer the 9NT beam.
The G2R or 6R etc (NiCad Battery for the P60/P61 powered SureFires is a highly viable option for a tiny rechargeable flashlight for duty use. It is longer, and you don't get the runtime of a Lithium powered alternative such as the G2 or 6P, but people find it very useful.
Please note that the 9AN & 8AX/8NX come standard with Hard Anodised Natural or Black finishes, and the kits come standard with a smart/rapid recharger and AC mains & Auto power adapters. Also, these models come with two B90 NiCad rechargeable batteries so you can have one on charge and use the other one at the same time.
SureFire offer a wide range of holsters and pouches, as well as Bezel mounted accessories such as BeamFilters and Traffic cones. Lanyard systems are also available, and very useful I might add.
So is the 9AN better then the M3T?
This is very application specific with rechargeables better for every night use compared to the M3 "what's that bump in the night?" type application.
Should you invest in a SureFire rechargeable?
Personally, I'd keep your money for the SureFire A2. This regulated light will give you better quality light for your Lithium batteries.

The ultimate SureFire right now is the 10X Dominator. That's a whole different level of light power. I'm happy to give you a more detailed review if you like.
