First sorry for my English.
I have a steel bar from a caterpillar of a bulldozer, bar that joins the pieces of a caterpillar together .
It is about 25 mm (1 inch) in diameter and about 450 mm long .
I want to build a knife out of it.
The problem is that i do not know what steel is usualy used to make these rods in order to proper heat treat .
An approximate answer is welcome too , ex (about 7% of this + 8% of that, in alloy with this or that )
Why this steel? It is shock rezistent , abrasive rezistent , very strong and hard , and i have a lot of it.
Perfect for a good knife .
It is posible to make some tests , quench _breake_anealing to determine the type of heat treatment , but
It is time consuming and you are never sure if all 100% of steel qualities are used .
thanks

Can you find a metallurgist in your your country?
They may be able to determine the composition for you.
Probably be able to cut off a 25mm piece and send it to them.

Take pics of the CAT and then closeup pics of the piece of steel in question.
Send these pics and your note to the Manufacturer of this piece of machinery; in care of Customer Service or Engineering Dept.
Engineering will know.
Good luck.

It is not likely to be sufficient for a reasonable knife. A better bet for knives would be a leaf spring from a car or truck, probably easy to find in a junkyard.
