Hello,

I'm very new to Spyderco. Would like to try out the brand. I currently own a Kershaw Leek.

Need:
Closed length under 4in. Preferably around 3.5in

Thanks

You have a budget set for this knife? I'm currently loving the Caly3 and Sage, both great knives. I might pick up a FRN Stretch when released.

That leaves out my personal favorite for EDC, the Delica (4 1/4 inches closed). There are some good choices in that size range.

You might want to take a look at the Dragonfly (3 7/32 inches closed):

The Native is another nice choice in that size range (3 15/16 inches closed)

If you don't mind spending a fair amount of money ($150 to over $250 on the street), the Kopa (3 7/16 inches closed) is a very nice knife available in several different exotic handle materials.

Tenacious for under 40
you could try a Delica.

True they are all great knives, but they are all also longer than the 4 inch max closed length that the OP asked for. ;)

Hope that helps! :)

For your intro to Spyderco, it's really hard to go wrong with the following:
Caly3 ( I recommend the CF/ZDP version)
Paramilitary (D2 if you can find it)
Delica/Endura in whatever configuration

WHy so small? You would really like the Endura or Delica. I guess you should go with the Native. It is a beast!

DFly, Delica, Salt I, Ladybug, Sage, Caly3

Of those, I'd grab the Delica as my intro Spyderco knife. Then I'd get the Dragonfly when it gets clad in G-10.

my SS handle dragonfly goes with me to the office everyday love that knive. The boast that it is a big little knife is no joke

This ratio doesn't exist in folding knives. Any 3" blade you'll find will have a ~4" closed length, at least. A a knife with a 3.5" blade will likely be 4.5" or longer closed. Spydercos in particular tend to favor ergonomics and utility over having a tight blade-to-handle ratio (the Shabaria being a notable exception).

Rookie @ 3 3/4 closed in foliage green is small and light. I've just retured to Spyderco and my first buy was a Rookie. Great little knife ! Too small for me so I returned it and got a Caly 3 G10. Build quality, one sided liner, ultra thin bronze washers and zero back lock play on Rookie is what resold me.

The Rookie is a good choice. My first Spyderco was a G10 Rookie and it currently is clipped to the visor in my car.

It used to be the knife I carried to school (I was a teacher) and my airplane knife prior to 9/11.

I recently too got into Spyderco and over the past year.. and in the past month have picked up the following:
Endura FRN
Delica FRN
Dragonfly FRN
Para D2

So far the Para is my favorite but the Delica is simple and gets most of my EDC.. it is so small and light but with a big strong blade. Look at the blade shapes.. I prefer a flat grind as on the Para (Caly3, Sage). Tenacious is a super knife for $30.. that was my first Spyderco about a year ago. Quality is very high for the price. Military is next for me. I say start with a Tenacious if not too big.. then go Delica.. then Para... Unless you have the cash.. I would pickup all 3 at once and save on shipping :-)

Pick a few you like and then hit YouTube and search for reviews/videos... lots of good info there.

For the size you give & depending on your budget, I'd suggest the Urban & Dragonfly. If you can find a good deal on a Calypso Jr. with laminate ZDP-189 blade, that would be an excellent choice. The others mentioned are great choices, too, but it really depends on how much you want/willing to spend (Isn't it usually?).

Delica or better yet the Salt 1 with H1 steel that won't rust. Basically the equivalent to the Delica but slimmer, lighter and RUST FREE!

3rd from the top

Pacific salt
Salt 1

I actually didn't realize that the Delica was over what the original poster had specified. :) It's such a light and smaller footprint you'd hardly know it.

Whatever you choose and for whatever reason let me tell you that in my opinion it would be hard to find a "Bad Spyderco Knife". ;)
