Howdy folks
I posted this question in the Prac Tac forum, and it didn't get very much attention. It applies here as well so I'm going to give it a shot, so to speak.

Basically my problem is this. I want to be able to effectively carry enough ammo for my survival and self defense needs. I don't want to talk too much about SHTF scenarios, but this may be a reality for me since I live in southern California. (I'm seriously freaked out about it and on the verge of moving back to Washington)
I'm really not a nut, I know that I may sound like one, but really I just want to be prepared for bad situations and be able to protect my family. I have taken the usual precautions as far as storing food, water and medical supplies. I even started a fair sized garden so that I'll be able to grow my own food.
Anyway, back getting back on topic. I went and bought a police duty belt and a holster for my HK uspC and that works fine. I can pick up magazine carriers for it easily enough. I also have a shoulder holster from when I lived in a state that allowed me to conceal carry.
My long guns are a Mossberg 12 gauge and an SKS. I recently bought (it hasn't arrived yet) a leather 12 gauge bandolier/belt to carry more shells. I know that I can find military surplus pouches for sks stripper clips, but I'm not sure about them. I don't really want to buy one of those SKS chest rigs, since appearance is important here. I know it sounds funny ( and it is) but I think the people of southern california would be less intimidated by someone with leather hunting-looking gear than some one dressed like a member of a swat team.

What do you all think?

How do you carry/plan to carry your ammo?

Pictures of your rigs would be great.

Thanks
-Chris

PS, MOD's if this doesn't belong here I'm sorry.

What about So cal that makes you feel it's so dangerous and that we're at the verge of a SHTF situation? Hypothetically even if a SHTF situation were to occur, what makes you think strapping on all your guns and ammo will help the situation? I think it's funny how you started by saying you're not a nut, but what you're proposing sounds pretty nutty to me.

I think it doesn't really matter when your holding a gun in plain sight. Sheep are ignorant, a gun is a gun to them.

If you're worried about appearance carry a pistol concealed.

OK thanks for the input .......... not real helpful though.

I don't think were on the verge of a shtf type of deal, I never said I did. But this would be a bad place to be if there was one. These things do happen, just look at New Orleans or the LA riots in the early 90s. I'd like to be prepared. I'm really not a nut, But I'm a good boy scout. Always prepared.
Why I'm worried about being in Southern California; The people of southern california (at least everyone I've ever met down here) are not the type to prepare for disasters. There are no natural resources here, no water. Their are fault lines all over the place. Crime is very high here. There are violent gangs. The government doesn't want us to be self reliant or be able to defend ourselves. And there would be literally MILLIONS of unprepared people trying to leave if there ever was a large scale disaster.

I'm not planning on running around down town LA with a shotgun. My plan is so stay put, but if for some reason I need to take my family out of southern california then I would need a good way to carry supplies. Some of which (ammo) I would potentially need faster access to than others.

Please if you're just going to insult me or my thread just stay out of it. If your criticism is not constructive what use is it?

Thanks

A pistol is a better choice, much more compact and able to handle every 2 legged snake that comes along. Carrying a shotgun will draw unwanted attention regardles of how you carry it and it's ammo. Same with an SKS.

Keep the shotgun and SKS for home protection, if you have to move take the pistol.

Sorry if that's not what you want to here but that's the way it is.
