I'm not sure if these would be called tactical knives, but I'm looking for a knife just like these but with a better blade quality:

http://www.amazon.com/Smith-Wesson-...=smith+and+wesson+first+response+rescue+knife

The steel on these knives is 4034 which I understand is pretty crappy. Does any manufactuerer make a knife of this style but with a good AUS 8 or 8Cr13MoV or 440c or better steel? I've search and could not find any like these.

Thanks.

A lot would depend on your price range. Also, did you want the rescue cutting devices?

If you were looking for knives that were in that category and price range, I would say check out the Kershaw Funxion EMT. It has a 3 in. 8Cr13MoV reverse-tanto blade with black coating, partial serrations, carabiner attached to the handle, and another handle tool with a belt cutter, flathead screwdriver, bottle opener, and 1/4 in receiver for hex bits. There's also a glassbreaker on there somewhere. I'm probably wrong on a few points - link to Kershaw's product page should be http://kershaw.kaiusaltd.com/knives/knife/funxion-emt.

I'm pretty sure it's out now. From your post, I think this sounds like a good fit for what you're asking. Granted, it is Kershaw's budget line and there are always bigger fish to catch, but compared to what you are currently looking at, I think this is a step up. My two cents and maybe a few other bits of spare change as well. Best of luck to ya!

Does it need to be spring assisted? If not, check out the Gerber Hinderer Rescue knife.... It's about the same price range and I've found assisted opening knives to be about as fast as a non-assisted knife. The Gerber can be found at the same place you were looking at the Smith and Wessons...I believe the blade steel is 440A

If you don't mind not having a glass breaker, a benchmade subrosa is a good assisted opening knife, it's been my edc for close to a year. It has much better steel than the S&W but you will pay for it, it's worth it in my opinion.

If you have to have the glass breaker but don't mind not having the assist an 810 contego would be a nice knife made with very good steel.

Thanks for all those good suggestions. My price range is up to 100$, though it seems like most I've looked at are either in the 30-60 range (Kershaw, Boker, SOG) or the $150+ range benchmade, Spyderco etc. The knife is a gift for my little brother who just became a cop. I wanted to get him something useful but good quality that would last him a while. I know some of the cops are issued the Smith and Wesson first responder I have linked in my first post, but the reviews I've seen are that it is a total piece of crap that will fall apart within the first year. The Kershaw knives seem pretty nice and good bang for the buck, the EMT looks nice for the price. But the Blur with the glassbreaker looks nice too:

And no it does not have to be assisted though I think that is a definite plus.
