Hey, was just lookn' for a little input from you folks. I'm an avid hiker and outdoors man and I'm looking for a blade to throw in my pack for when things go wrong basicly. Somebody hurts themselves in the mountains and you gotta build shelter or a splint, fire prep ect. ect. and I've been hearing more and more about busse knives being the toughest so I'm researching the models. So far I have three in mind. ash 1 skinny ash and the batac. Light is good to me but I want the capabilities to do heavy woodwork too battoning through tough stuff if necessary. I am leaning towards the skinny ash right now but the batac looks awful good too. cant take anything larger than an ash dont want anything shorter than the batac. thoughts??

When you say larger than an ASH, do you mean longer blade or heavier? I would recommend a NMSFNO or FSH at .25 thickness for any battoning but these are both longer than an ASH at 8 in. If you decide size "doesn't matter" get a FFFBM! :)

Skinny ASH. Plenty strong enough. Standard ASH is overkill fat IMHO. You can choke back on the Skinny ASH to improve it's chopping.

I like the SFNO handles better than the ASH's. Nothing at the rear to hinder different types of grips used.

+2 on the skinny ash1.
I love mine.
Here is a photo from the guy who sold it to me.

Another knife that might be even better would be the
SFNOLE
I havent brought myself to use any of mine YET :)

Happy Hunting!

I'm a huge fan of the Skinny ASH, and it'd be hard to go wrong with it.

The only thing is, when you baton, it sure is nice to have an extra inch or so of blade over the ASHs. In many packs, you'd never notice the extra length.

I'd vote for a Sarsquatch for that role. The blade is only slightly longer, the handle is as user-friendly as I've ever held, and it out-chops the ASH, skinny or not. You can also find them at decent prices.

I have a skinny Ash, great knife, but after Getting a satinSFNO and using them both alot, i gotta go with the SFNO, just works better for me. You can't go wrong with either, its just a matter of personal taste.

well thanks folks, I'll probly keep my eyes peeled for a skinny ash when I have the funds ready (I should have mentioned i like full flat grinds) Also I just cant help but like the look of em'. Looks like a bushwork machine.

The skinny ASH-1's are GREAT...
but so you know, they actually have a full convex grind.
Ever so slight, but its there. Adds a bit of forward balance over
the ASH-1 LEs & customs with the full height grind.

I chose to go with the LE... not that I don't like the skinny,
just like the satin and linen tigerhide better.

The linen tigerhid is awesome!

But if you did want a slightly longer blade... I will second the SARSquatch.
If you go with this one, get the competition finish 2008 SE...
sharpest Busse I've ever had.

I love the skinny ash, but...

I say go for a bushwacker mistress while they are available from the Busse store...

They are relatively light for the length, same thickness as the skinny ash and as a survival blade, the few extra inches will come in handy for chopping and batonning.

Also, at $347 it will be cheaper than a skinny ash or nmsfno and you get the handles/colors you want.

I think itd be a mistake to pass it up...

He hit it. Really, for the price right now, if I was going to buy one, I would order a Bushwacker Battle Mistress. However, it is a 10 incer. But it is skinny for the size.

If you can find one, a snfo would be a great knife as well. But will cost you at least as much as a Bushwacker Battlemistress.

Look at www.bussecombat.com or www.bussecompanystore.com

Another vote for the Bushwacker Battle Mistress. You probably won't find a better deal for a knife. Get one now at shop prices while you can and make the sacrifice of space in your pack. You will not regret it!

BWM is a real good value, but it might not be what you are looking for.
I mean I think a small hatchet, and a knife combo will be far more useful. I usually carry an entrenching tool and I got me a BATAC. Keep in mind that the blades you are talking about aren't the lightest blades around. But as always its what ever you are most comfortable with. Plus using knives might just be more fun, and after all nobody is making you go hike, you are doing it for yourself.

I agree, if you are willing to carry larger blades, the Sarsquatch or even the big Bushwacker make great camp and survival knives.

Another recommendation for the Competition Sarsquatch. About as light as the Skinny, but chops better.
