I have waffle'd back and forth between getting a Samsung 191T or a traditional CRT display. To be competitive with the legibility, resolution, and real "real estate" on the monitor face I am looking at 21" and larger CRT's.

For reference, I use a dual Samsung 172N on my primary desk at work (replacing a pair of 19inch Sony's). In the various labs, I see everything from antiquated 15 and 17 inch VGA (wow 600x800 on some ;) ) to various brands of 20+ older CRT's (both name brand such as Dell, Viewsonic, NEC, and others that are unknown).

I am looking specifically at the "SONY 21"CRT MONITOR Model CPD-G520P" monitor because I really like the Trinitron tubes abilities with text in spreadsheets and word processing. I have also considered the "Viewsonic 22" CRT Display Model P225F".

I am not a big gamer (in fact I have no games intentionally loaded other then what Microsoft gave me) and don't watch movies on it either. Lots of web surfing and email in general, and support work related applications in software development and people management will be the bulk of my usage. I want a high scan rate so, most of the cheaper alternative are ruled out in my usage. I am targeting 1600x1200@85Hz minimum with more being better :).

I would be interested in hearing your experiences and recommendations with current generation monitors.

THANKS!

I'm sitting here typing this on an older Sony Multiscan 20SFII. It's a great monitor, but I'd punt it in a second for a Samsung 191T. That's one great flat panel monitor! CRTs are capable of fantastic images, but so is the Samsung and you get all that desktop real estate back and lose all the heat generation! It's no contest in my mind. The only thing I can see that the Samsung gives up is grey scale tracking which is not such a big deal unless you watch a lot of movies or do video post work. The 191's on the top of my Christmas list. It's the first LCD that I've seen that has pixel response time that is fast enough for gaming.

A few weeks ago I purchased a Samsung 193v from COSTCO (with a nice rebate) and I'm very happy with it. Most noticeable improvement (for me) - much less eye strain! :)

Not sure how it compares price wise, but you might want to take a look at the Samsung 213T, 21" LCD.

Don't forget that the LCD's use 25% of the power that a similar sized CRT will. If you can afford it and you're not into watching movies on it, get an LCD!

I resisted updating my monitor for years because I had a very huge, and very cool (20 inch) CRT monitor. I loved that thing, even if it weighed nearly 50 pounds and took up all of my desk space.

Well, recently I did take the plunge and went with a 19 inch LCD SHARP DVI monitor and all I have to say is I wasted a lot of time. The Sharp DVI LCD is so much clearer that I am now seeing things in my images that I never saw before. The colors are more vibrant and the detail much more crisp.

Because of the way they measure viewable size, the 19inch LCD actually has more viewable space than the 20inch CRT did. It takes up 1/4 of the space my old CRT did.

I don't miss the old CRT and will never buy another one.

I've been using my Samsung 191T for over 6 months now, and I am still absolutely thrilled with it. I've used 21" Sony FD Trinitrons in the past, and I loved them also. For CRTs, nothing really beats the Trinitrons. However, the Samsung digital LCDs are yet another step better, and it's a big step up. The best part is the sharpness. There's no convergence of three beams. There is no "refresh" involved. I use my panel for surfing, email, games, and video.

I'm just waiting for prices to keep dropping so I can get a second panel for dual display. :D

I've been a Sony fan for decades, but after my last
junk Sony 19" I looked elsewhere for a cost
effective monitor. What I found was KDS brand
products that simply blow the competition away for
price, warranty & picture.

Here's a link to there site........

You can find them at Best Buy and other retailers
nationwide.

The sony 21 incher has been Maximum PC's CRT choice for five years in a row. For LCD, they like the Sharp. Phenomenal color gradations, but $4K
