I am looking for a knife to use around camp. Cooking, skinning and other small camp chores that may arise. I want a blade in the 4 inch range, nothing longer than 5. I have looked at the Bark River Fox River which looks good. I have also thought about an Ontario RAT TAK. I don't want to spend much more than $100. Let me know what you guys would recmomend. Thanks!!

Wow as I was reading you post the first two knives that popped into my head were Bark River and Ontario "TAK". Do you like "scandi" style knives. I personally think they are the best all around general utility camp knife. Kellam Fang would fit the bill.

Well, I think there are a number of good choices in this catagory. Two that I am considering for just that role are:

Probably the classic small camp knife may be the Marbles Woodcraft. This is the style of knife carried by the famous woodsman and outdoor writer Horace Kephart. The 4.5" blade is made of 0170-6 Carbon steel and I believe these knives are still made in the USA. Should be available for around $80.

Another knife I would consier would be the puukko-style Wolf Pack knives by Kellam Knives Co. Either the Strike model (3.5" blade) or the Fang model (4.5" blade) could fit your requirements and cost right around $100. :)

Hope that helps!

Nice choices all around, including yours.

How 'bout the cheap but functional Mora 2000? The Foster Fears Survival knife looks good too (I believe they're finishing a pass-around over at the other forum and starting a new one here).

That's what I use and it's awesome. I prefer a thin blade for a camp knife so I can slice veggies and stuff. The M2 is wicked sharp and fairly easy to sharpen on a diamond stone. Very hard to beat...

Trailside, How about a Grohman belt knife, THE #1 ORIG. OR THE BOAT KNIFE(CAN. MIL.) VCM3

Cold Steel Master Hunter either the carbon or stainless steel blade.

Another vote for the Howling Rat. Great knife for general camp use. You can also check out the Bandicoot, another one of my favorites.

I've been thinking about this, and another good blade would be the A.G. Russel Deer Hunter,it's got a 4" blade, kinda thin, good for huntingand food prep. The Thumbolt style sheath gives you options, carry it on the belt, hang it or in a pack it's protected.I keep one in my gear as a back-up,and it's a better knife than most of my hunting buddies,in my opinion. You should have a saw and an axe in your camp too. Vcm3
