Hi,

I've owned one Barlow in my life. And that was in my long faded youth. I think it was a Russel if I remember.

I'm feeling a need to reacquaint myself with this pattern. I would like one with plain carbon blades. I've looked at Case and Bear&Son. None of the Case Barlows tripped my trigger. Bear has one in 1095 that kind of tempts me. But the quality is so hit and miss. Though the ladder Damascus and mammoth ivory model looks very nice, it's more than I want to spend right now.

Any other brands to look at? Should I just keep trawling evilbay? I would like to keep the cost in the $40 to $50 range.

Would like to see some pictures too if anybody has them.:)

Thanks,
dalee

I owned the Case Stag Barlow with the CV blades. I really like it. Robust, fit and finish was great. Very pocketable.

Have you looked at Rough Rider? Don't own one myself, but they get glowing reviews here in the Traditional section. Their Barlow knives look great, and with a large selection of handles and blade variations. Considering their prices sit in the $12 range, I'd be willing to give one a try.

A few years ago I bought a Hen & Rooster knife, made in Germany with stag handles. It was advertised as a "gents folder" or similar, but was unmistakably based on the Barlow pattern. Don't see them offered any more, but you might come across one on eBay or elsewhere.

Here's a link with photo, but it's "temporarily out of stock," and has been listed that way for years. ;)

Boker is another brand I would consider.

Great Eastern's Northfield or Tidioute #25 should do the trick! I have one in my pocket right this moment...it has the coolest burnt stag I've had on a production knife!

i have a Scatt & Morgan single blade--jigged bone and it is awsome--fit and finish is perfect--sharp as can be right out of the box:D

I really love my Boker Barlow, old world style and excellant quality.

I have the Boker; it's the original of the A.G.Russell. The difference is the handle slabs.
Very nice piece.

I've never been disappointed in a Schatt & Morgan, either.

Hi,

I'd forgotten all about the A.G. Russel. I've looked at that one before. But sadly, I just don't like them Ol' Yellar handled knives. A character flaw I know.:) And Esav, I thought there was a familial resemblance between the Boker and Russel. Enough that I had to open pictures of both side-by-side.

I might get a RR for fun too, but I think I'm kind of leaning to the Boker. I really want carbon blades. I had a Boker Copperhead for a while. I liked the quality, but I couldn't get along with the pattern, a bit too big for me. I gave it my Father-in-law as he needed a new knife. He loves it.

This whole shopping for a new slippie is SOOOO stressful!:D

Thanks Guys!

The cream of crop when it comes to Barlows is bound to be the 2009 BFC Forum Knife Barlow. :D

Another fan of the GEC #25 Northfield here. At 3 inches, it is comfortable even in thin dress pants, but it is still a stout knife. Mine has the clip point main blade and smooth buffalo scales.

lol, shush, can't let the cat of the bag. Otherwise, there might not be enough stag to go around. jk

1) BFC MMIX
2) GEC
3) AG Russell
4) Boker

Those would be my pick

The OP wanted to keep costs down and prefers carbon.
The Barlow I was using all afternoon in the garden was a Russell sawn bone barlow with carbon spear&pen blades, stainless brushed bolster.Very good well made authentic Barlow that cost me less than 35dollars.You can also get the larger single blade Daddy Barlow-some with easy opener.
