I used to have a BK10, and I stupidly traded it away about four years ago. Although I mainly favor a
smaller knife, I feel like I could use something big and hefty enough to substitute for a hatchet. I have a Kershaw Outcast, and while I like the size and heft, I dislike that it came really dull and is impossible to
sharpen.

I want the knife to be able to clear saplings and brush, and also to process campfire wood. Would a 7
serve me well, or should I try a 9?

Yeah, it will, and yes, you should. :D

The 7 is an all around "go gitter". Not much it can't do, I like to call it, "The Little Black Dress" of the BKT lineup. If you don't know, ask your wife or girlfriend, or both. It universal, and well made.

Then, you got Big Niner. Big knife, big chopper, big splitter, big, big, big. Good at alot of large knife chores, but it comes up a little short when you are bushcrafting you a wooden chain. Not saying it can't be done, but it will make your hands tired.

Just in case you were wondering, I take a BK9 with me everyday, in my BOB. Always gots me one, close at hand.

call kabar and get a limited edition 10 if they are left. if not, well buy a 9 and a 2. thats the ass kickenist team to ever hit the woods.

The 2 seems a bit too thick and possibly short. I recall my Crewman being a good knife, but too short for chopping and
Too bulky for finer work. I think I am leaning towards the 9 , but maybe I could get by with a 7.

the 7 does wonders, but remember it is a fighting knife (of course dont tell it that or itll bite ya) for processing wood, the 9 then. chops like a beast, batons, just a monster. if you got the skills and tools grind a choil and itll do fine work as well

Yeah, they even make special one. :D

The 2 has got quite a bit of chopping power for its size, because of the thick blade. Paired with a Mora, Opinel or SAK/multitool it's awesome, IMO. The BK-2 is my one-tool survival knife, although when talking about edged tools in general I'd favor a good axe. But I'm drifting away here, I like my 2 for a great survival knife, I'd like to try the 7 though. I say get the 2 first if you like batoning, the 7 if you don't. There isn't much wood that's able to snap a BK-2.

I have recently purchased a BK-9. I think it's perfect for clearing saplings and processing firewood. I don't like wearing it on my belt though. It stays in the pack.

for heavier stuff, get the 9 if you're hacking on heavier stuff...

if you can find one, get the 6 - available again ... someday

same goes for the 4 (in about 5 months?)

or you could get the Zombie chopper that KaBar makes. that slight hook should be wicked for brush...

or perhaps the KaBar grass machete.

or hell, get a Fiskars Brush Hook :D :D :D yeah yeah, shuddup. i like them. good tool for the money, serve different needs.

I like the BK9 not just for chopping but for snap cuts too. If you are clearing saplings and brush, IMO the BK9 is what you want. I use it for hunting all the time and am constantly clearing paths (when I have a downed animal I'm tracking), removing branches in the way and clearing deadfalls from winter-killed trees.

BK9 all the way.

I've yet to even hold a 7, but for the duty you're looking for a knife to perform, I can't imagine anything in the Becker line being better than the 9. The 2 is just an awesomely designed knife, and I couldn't see living without one (or three), but since you specified what you plan to do with it, the 9 is your best bet IMO.

Your talking about a BK9,if you are trying to replace a hatchet.
All around good knife BK7.

You just gotta get the right sheath for workin in. This is the ticket for me:

Wear it all day w/no issues. Leg strap is adjustable, has a quick release buckle & is made out of HD elastic webbing. It flexes & moves with you when you bend/squat/stand/sit/enter/exit/get on/get off vehicles. Cost as much as the knife but worth every penny.
