I've been lurking on the Busse forum for a few months now and think I want to give one a try. There are so many models with names I do not understand. The use of the knife would be for camping/utility trips that I take me kids on. We like to rough it a little so the knife needs to be versatile. Typically I like medium sized knives for this application. Originally I was looking at a skinny Ash-1.
Also can you recommend a smaller knife to pair with it. Something for skinning and possible wood carving.

For skinning, something thin like a BAD (boney active duty) or an ABS (anorexic boss street)(maybe too big). A GW (game warden) or a SAR 3 would do the job too.

And if you like roughing it, get an ASH-1, good and fat.

Personally, I like something bigger, like a SFNO (special forces natural outlaw)or a NMSFNO (nuclear meltdown special forces natural outlaw), or if you find the fusion handle more comfortable, you could go with a FSH (fusion steel heart).

i think of the ash as a large knife, but i guess in the busse world it is medium.

for smaller blades, look at a game warden or cultellus. i think the warden would be a better skinner, but the cultie would be better for carving.

up on the main site now are the boss street le's. i think it would make a fine do-it-all.

i personally like the hell razor better than the skinny. it's got the corrugated bevels (coupled with an overall great grind geometry) and it's got a little more heft than the skinny while still being 3/16 thick and fairly light. all it needs a little thinning of the edge and it's one of the most versatile knives i've ever used.

also, if you want to go up to .25 thick, the tank buster is another very versatile knife in a compact package. amazing chopper for its size.

for a smaller blade, the swamp rat HRLM is a fine knife. also, the anorexic boss streets available direct from busse right now look pretty sweet

Hmmmm. I am looking at the Boss Street LE on the Busse site. Which would be the most desirable in the future?

I'm probably in the minority but if you go with an ASH, go thin. A SFNOLE at .220 is a nice medium size blade in Busse terms.

Size comparison top to bottom:
SFNOLE, Boss Street, Meaner, Cultellus, AD, GWLE and Skeleton Warden.

Mind posting a pic of the ASH-1 :) ? I am also in the market for my first busse for camping and such, debating between the SAR-3 and going full on to a ASH-1 and using an izula for the smaller stuff.

It's hard to say which will be the most desirable in the future. The no choil model is the most rare in the overall Busse lineup, but only time will tell which model will be the most popular or desired.
I would recommend that you get what you like and maybe it will be on the top of the list in the future. If it isn't, then at least you've had the one you prefered for your use. No matter what you choose you should be able to get at least your original investment out of it if you do end up selling it.
I wanted to get all three, but a PAM 359 forced me to pick only one, the no choil. One that I have wanted for some time. Hopefully I'll be able to add the other two to my sty sometime in the future.

For camping I LOVE my skinny ASH. If I ever decide that I'm bored with knives it's the one fixed blade I'll keep.

For a smaller blade the Swamp Rat Vex is incredibly handy.

ETA: somebody else recommended a nmsfno. I also think that is an outstanding knife.

pick which one you like the looks of now and get it.

after all, next month you will be going into debt over others, and trading all your non-bussekin off for more.

Check out the SARSquatch, it is a very good all-rounder, and can be had for a (relative) bargain.

I think a MUK would be perfect ;)

Skinny ASH is probably the best all around Busse for what you are looking for.

This is what I was going to say actually. The Skinny Ash 1 is bomb proof despite its misleading name. Lawrence Taylor was the "skinny" one when he hung out with his defensive line. :D

And the Swamp Rat Vex is quite possibly THE best knife in its size range. Thin enough for slicing, D2 steel makes it tough as nails and the handle is perfect as far as ergonomics.

Easy. Get the CABS that is offered currently on the website for your 4" needs. My "medium" is a convexed NMSNFO. Great blade. Second choice is the Sarsquatch. Also a great blade. I only prefer the NMSFNO because of the extra blade length. Dimensionally the SarS and the HellRazor are roughly the same size. Find the best deal and go with that because you won't give up much if anything going with either of those. Good luck.

I vote CABS for a medium blade. the lack of choil is awesome.
if you're looking slightly bigger- BATAC/ SJTAC

Might as well get an anorexic Boss Street while they are available from Busse. They will go up in price on the aftermarket if you decide you want one later. IMO, go for the small choil or choiless designs.

For a medium knife, anything from a Skinny ASH, Hellrazor, SFNO, Steel heart, NMSFNO will all do.

BATAC, Boss Jack and Boss Street are all good camping knives IMO. And all are somewhat reasonably priced:thumbup:
