Recommend A DVD Player To Me

I have a JVC XV-421 DVD player that I'm not happy with and want to replace. It has the super annoying habit of freezing on frames, then playing again for a few seconds, then freezing again. Sometimes entire chapters of a DVD are rendered unwatchable in this way. Interestingly, it almost never happens at the begining of a DVD, it's always more towards the end.

Now, I have to admit on my small personal collection it plays the DVD's properly. But on many NetFlicks and local video store rentals, it's just an excercise in frustration. Some I can play some no problem, but about 50% of the DVDs I rent exhibit serious playback problems. I do clean the DVDs, and the rentals in question seem to be in pretty good shape. They may have some very minor surface scratches or blemishes, but that's it. I basically prefer to rent VHS now, it's so bad.

I think my JVC player is just bad at playing back anything other than a perfect DVD. At this point, I don't even care about features, I just want a player that can deal with slightly scratched DVDs and play them back like a VCR instead of a frickin slide projector. I don't feel like spending a lot of $$$, because I feel like taking a sledge hammer to my JVC - total waste of money. Well, maybe it will play music CD's o.k.

Any suggestions for a replacement? Anyone else out there have bad luck with JVC?

I have 2 progressive scan Samsung brand DVD players. Both of them work great with everything I have tried. The one I bought during Christmas was on $40

I did quite a bit of research a few years ago when I bought mine. I ended up going with a Toshiba SD2710, and have been pretty happy with them. It has "paused" on a couple DVDs during chapter changes, but nothing long or annoying. It has been a pretty damn good player when my friends/family Sony ES and high end Sony players crapped out.

Toshiba usually gets pretty good reviews from www.audioreview.com
That site is a pretty good resource. But as always, YRMV

This might come as a surprise, but I've actually had the cheapie Apex DVD players recommended in several stores by salespeople.
I bought a compact single DVD Apex for $53 from Wal-Mart when my Panasonic 5-disc bit the dust within weeks of going out of warranty. My intention was to use it while the Panasonic was being repaired, and then I'd have the Apex for another TV, without having spent a bunch of money for a DVD player I didn't really need.
The Apex has been more reliable, and has more features. I like it better, and ~18 months later, still haven't bothered to get the Panasonic fixed.
No problem with video store rentals, but I've never used Netflicks, and don't know anything about them.

I wasn't even looking to buy a DVD player when I saw an Apex on sale for $50 at Circuit City, I couldn't resist. I've had it close to two years without a problem. I have to admit my favorite way to view a DVD is on my iMac 17" flat screen, what a beautiful picture. ;)

How about a DVD palyer that can play asian and US disk? anyone?

go to www.dvdrhelp.com and look on their list of DVD PLAYERS do a search of "region free" players. Find one that comes region free or is easy to hack and then get one.

I strongly recomend the APEX brand as they tend to be VERY easy to make region-free and are cheap to boot. THe downside is that they tend to have funky controllers. I have a three disk APEX that will play any kind of disk media out there without worry about region (plays VCDS DVDRs PHOTO CDS foreign/PAL encoded CDs etc). I paid maybe $40 bucks for it 5-7 years ago.

Yeager, Thank you.My Lady is still in Asia/Oz . I know she'll come back with a whole load of disk  :) It'll be a nice surprise :D
