I have a JVC XV-421 DVD player that I'm not happy with and want to replace. It has the super annoying habit of freezing on frames, then playing again for a few seconds, then freezing again. Sometimes entire chapters of a DVD are rendered unwatchable in this way. Interestingly, it almost never happens at the begining of a DVD, it's always more towards the end.
Now, I have to admit on my small personal collection it plays the DVD's properly. But on many NetFlicks and local video store rentals, it's just an excercise in frustration. Some I can play some no problem, but about 50% of the DVDs I rent exhibit serious playback problems. I do clean the DVDs, and the rentals in question seem to be in pretty good shape. They may have some very minor surface scratches or blemishes, but that's it. I basically prefer to rent VHS now, it's so bad.
I think my JVC player is just bad at playing back anything other than a perfect DVD. At this point, I don't even care about features, I just want a player that can deal with slightly scratched DVDs and play them back like a VCR instead of a frickin slide projector. I don't feel like spending a lot of $$$, because I feel like taking a sledge hammer to my JVC - total waste of money. Well, maybe it will play music CD's o.k.
Any suggestions for a replacement? Anyone else out there have bad luck with JVC?
