Around a couple hundred.

I think you can get yourself a Sony or Panasonic. I don't think you can go wrong with either one. I am partial to Sony. The DVD recorders have come down a great deal in price lately, and I think you can find a decent one in that price range.

what you want to consider is weather your dvd recorder needs a built in hard drive or not
if you just want to staright recorded programs and vhs tapes to dvd,,then you can get good recorders for a few hundred
if you record a program from tv,,,you are also recording commercials and other crap like that
so then its a whole new ball game,, if you want to process your stuff like ediiting out commercials then you need one witha hard drive . that allows you to go through your recorded program and remove commercials,,and to even combine and split programs
oh yes they all (as far as i know) support copy protection,,,so if you want to copy store bought dvd's forget it ,,,they wont
might be different now,,i dont know
a hard drive also allows you to use it like a tivo (pause "life" tv)

ones with ahrd drives are a lot more expensive,,but in my mind worth it

Although I've been a dedicated Sony user for twenty five years or so, my DVD recorder is a Panasonic. It works great and has a better remote than the Sony alternative. I've had some terrible time with the quality of Sony remotes of all flavors of late, the new ones don't have the features of the old and seem cheaply constructed.

I would recommend one with a hard drive, if it's within your budget. Does add some versatility. The single feature of a DVD recorder I enjoy the most is the ability to play and record at the same time.

NEC OEM DVD burner = $43 shipped
Software = Free
Web sites with instructions = Free

If your goal is to back up commercial DVDs, which is a good idea considering how cheap DVD-Rs are, then go with this.

You can also remove region protection (screw-the-consumer-for-the-benefit-of-the-motion picture-industry protection) and other highly undesirable things.
