I want a new fixed blade knife for camping, hiking, and general outdoors use. I got a Grohmann # 1 a few years ago, which is a fine knife and I really want to like it . . . but I don't for some intangible reason.

I'd like about a 4" blade, but no longer than 5", a plain edge, a secure sheath, and about a $50 price tag.

Okay, point me in a few directions!

Ck out the Becker line, great knives for the $ , ck out ebay where you may find some deals on one. :D

Cold Steel Master Hunter. 4 1/2" blade, consealex sheath, good steel, and tough as nails....all for about $50.00. Hope that helps, Jim

If you like the deep-sheath security and general utility of a Grohman but want better (or at least more conventional) ergonomics, try one of the rubber-handled Marttiini of Finland hunting/camping knives. Widely available on eBay for less than $30, primo steel, and the great Scandinavian grind for ease of sharpening freehand.

I got a BUCK Woodsman not too long ago and really like it . Their are so many to choose from that their is one out their that is "for you " . The trick is not spending hundreds finding the one . Anyway , I reccomend the woodsman . Good luck .

I suggest a bark river northstar or fox river.both are 4.375 inches convex grind A2 steel.
the fox river is basically the same knife thats more heavy duty (ie) thicker A2 steel.

Ditto on one of the small Buck fixed blades. The Woodsman or Pathfinder for instance.

Have you seen the lightweight fixed blade knives at AG Russell? The Bird and Trout or the Deer Hunter, depending on how long of a blade you need.

Last year DLT Trading had some Northwoods Drop Point hunters with wood handles on sale for $45; I bought two. Great knives, but don't know if you'll find them at that price.

Add a bit more $$ and there are several nice Bark River models that would suit you.

How about an AG Russell Woodswalker? The leather pocket sheath is cool, and the knife is light enough to carry anywhere.

Tons of knives out there for you. Happy Shopping!

Hey Foilist, some good recommendations already, I will add/second the following;

- Several Models of the Frosts or Erikkson knives will amaze you, you can check them out at Ragnars Knife Catalog . These are SUPER cutters for the Money, simply choose one or two that appeal to you. He also has Marttiinnis which have been mentioned already.

- Much heavier and tougher are the Becker Knife and Tool knives, the Crewman is the one to look for. These are great knives but may be overkill for simple Hiking / Camp chores.

- Bark Rivers are very nice, but they are usually more expensive.

- Also, a Spyderco Vagabond is well within your price Range. Or a MUCH better Spydie Fixed blade is the Moran Drop Point. There was one of these for sale here on the Forums just recently that was just within your price. THIS knife is one of the best for that price point that you will find!!

Just a thought, you may want to Post your Grohmann for TRADE on the forums here as there are lots of folks that like these. You could try and Trade it for one of the knives mentioned in this thread that interests you... just a thought.

Good Luck and let us know what you choose.

A bit over your price range, but a great knife is the Swamp Rat Howling Rat. Right size and about the handiest shape I've seen. I've had mine about 3 years and just love it.

My wife loves it too and now it spends most of it's time in the kitchen taking on anything from veggies to deconstructing whole raw chickens. Really outstanding, my favorite Rat.

Have you checked out any of the other knives in the Grohmann line? The #4 is much beefier than the #1, with a more secure sheath. The handle design is perfect for gloved use. This is my choice for general-purpose outdoors use.

Moving from your Grohmann #1 to something like a Becker will be a big jump in terms of weight and sheeple factor (although they're fantastic knives).

Cheers,

Mike

Thanks for all the suggestions. I've become infatuated with the Becker Crewman, although it is an overkill for my uses. Maybe I can rationalize getting one somehow . . .

The Benchmade Rant Pardue looks promising and a bit more modest for general camping use and woods loafing.

I'll look into some of the other suggestions too.

I really wish Becker would come out with a "camp knife". I'm thinking of a blade that is the same shape and thickness of the Becker Necker, but a bit longer - maybe about 4.25" - and a handle like the rest of th Becker knifes - or maybe a bit less robust.

Priced around $50 that would be a GREAT camp knife!!

Ranger Knives Little Bird: light sharp, tough, and made by a very talented knife maker who is currently in Iraq.
