I do a fair amount of hiking, camping, and other outdoor activities. I would like suggestions for a small to medium sized fixed blade knife to handle camp chores or other utility duties.
(I saw the new Gerber LMF II and the size seems about right, not too big. I like the carry options it has for belt with leg strap or leg only)
Price range: $80 or less?

Short KaBar maybe?

Thank you in advance!
Gabe

the newer gerbers arent very good, IMO. they used to be pretty synonymous with quality but they are slipping nowadays.

look into the becker line. they are all great tools and an excellent value for the money. you can usually find them under $50, so not only are they a great knife but you also wont hesiitate to use thhe $#%& out of them. theyre one of the best bang for the buck deals going ATM.

i would recommend the BK-7 or BK-9, depending on how large a knife you want (keep in mind the BK-9 is also thicker blade stock so it will be more durable), or the BK-1 (Brute) for even more utility. there are reviews for each of these in the knife review forum.
cheers,

Thanks for the quick responses! Looks like plenty to pick from :)
I will certainly look into all suggested so far.

Try the Spyderco Vagabond..it's a cheap user, so no big deal if it gets damaged or lost. I really like that it has its own sheath inside of it. Well, not a sheath exactly. Look for yourself.

30 dollars or so. AUS6. 3 inch blade.

For a little more cash, a Dozier Pro guide is as good as they get. 4 3/4 blade, 9 3/16 overall with a kydex sheath for 195.00. That's my choice for backpacking and camping.....hope that helps, Jim

One of the Camillus BK series. Cold Steel Master Hunter. For a smaller one the Mora knives are a great value.

Heck with all these candidates I may have to get several to try!

Where would I find the Moras? The knife retailers I'm looking at online don't carry them..?

thanks,
Gabe

IMO: Moras are great knives - for the money. many people like them because they are dirt cheap and hold a good edge and perform well in cutting. i would hardly call them 'hard use' utility knives, however. the main reason they are ever put into hard use situations is because they are so dirt cheap people dont really care about damaging them, and not because this is the purpose for which they were intended. if you want a dirt cheap hard use knife you are better off looking at the Cold Steel Bushman.

You also might want to consider the Spyderco Temperance and the SOG Revolver.

For a “hard use” beater, I would suggest a 12” Ontario D-guard machete and/or a Bushman.

The Benchmade 220 Resistor is cool, and it has a 3.4 inch blade. They pop up used for around 70 bucks usually.
