Got a buddy who wants to get his first real knife, checking here since his budget is smaller than what I usually spend.

Parameters:
  • Folding pocket knife
  • Thinks he would prefer tanto, drop point, or clip point. (I'm sure would be open to others)
  • Average sized. Nothing huge and nothing tiny. I'm assuming around 3 to 3.5 in blade. (Wiggle room here)
  • Strict no serrations.
  • Budget up to $50 shipped. (His current one is $15 wally world)
  • Country of origin: Anything but China and Pakistan. Taiwan would be fine.

Just a general edc.
I've suggested him to look at kershaw, spyderco, cold steel, and SAK.

Thanks in advance!

With these criteria, I'd get a SAK or a Case slipjoint. Lots of options in that price range.

It really depends on what he will use the knife for. The RAT 1 and Buck suggestions are very good ones. Kershaw also makes some 8Cr13Mov offerings in the specified budget.

A Buck 110 will do everything you will ever need a knife to do. Buck 110, is a lifetime knife. Even if he breaks it Buck will re blade it for $10.

While I agree the 110 is an excellent bang-for-the-buck(pun intended) long-term investment, it is NOT a pocket knife. Not that there's anything wrong with that, I have two, and a 101. But, I'm going to assume he wants a pocket clip, rather than a sheath. Ontario, RAT-1 or RAT-2, in D2. Just good solid knives, in good steel, with a good heat treatment. Everything anyone would need.

Ontario Rat 1, or a Kershaw Link. The Kershaw Link is made in the USA. Both solid knives. The Link will take a keener edge, just barely

Agree about RAT 1 or 2, and the Buck Slims are good bargains.

Yeah, Rat 1 or Rat 2 really are great. Doesn't matter if you get the AUS-8 or the D2 version either.

If you want stuff that's made in the good ol' U S of A, there's some decent stuff for not much money.

Buck has the Vantage, the Bantam, the 112 Slim Ranger and even the 840 Sprint Select Flipper in your price range.

Buck stuff has a real good warranty and is exceedingly easy to keep sharp and clean. I like Buck's offerings alot.

As mentioned, the Kershaw Link is made in the USA and is awesome, but I carry the American made 1620 Scallion more often.

One that I don't own yet... but I'm gonna... is the Gerber Shark Belly! Really looking forward to grabbing one of these. He might like it.

My vote best all around >50 bucks....CASE 6318. The long clip is good for minor surgeries, especially splinters. The sheepsfoot is nice and aggressive for slashing cardboard, opening tape seams on amazon packages, etc and the spey is kind of there for looks but can scrape minor crud off stuff...I have ground the spey to a slight spear to make it more useful....Its is really hard to beat a 3 blade slip joint - med stockman pattern....Merry Christmas all!

Some of these choices are a tad above $50, but their longevity should more than make up for it:
Cold Steel Voyager Large (clip point or tanto)
Cold Steel Code 4 (clip point, drop point, or tanto)
Cold Steel Finn Wolf
Spyderco Delica (in VG-10)
Spyderco Endura (in VG-10)

Personally, I’d recommend the Voyager. Bit above the recommended budget, but the toughness for a folding knife is pretty insane.

My comments were about 110’s in general. Backing up stevekolt stevekolt ’s recommendation of the 110 slim select.
