Can any of you fine gentlemen recommend a good ceramic rod? Just for touch ups and what not. Preferably field sized, not kitchen sized

Or are all ceramic rods really the same?

The lansky ceramic sharp stick about 8" long costing around ten dollars. After using a ton of field sharpeners I now take a 1200 grit dmt steel with me in the field for constant touch ups during hard use. At first I thought it would be to big but I just slide it in the molle webbing on the side of my pack and I forget it is even there. It removes a very small amount of metal and constantly gives me a fresh razor sharp edge by removing any burrs or rolls in the edge. Good luck man!

I have a gatco tri-seps ceramic works really well, is triangular for different serrations, and has grooves for fishhooks and such. but the one i see online now claims to be diamond.. not sure I'd go for that.

I've bought the 3 dollar e-bay rods and I've used my white Lansky turn-box rods. I can't tell a different at all but I just use them for touch ups.

Ceramic rods come in different grits just like stones. I dislike the rods because the knifepoint wraps over the rod at the end of the stroke and ruins the sharpness of the point. I like to finish my stroke in the middle of a flat stone to ensure the sharpness of the point. You can get folding 2 sided diamond "stones" for touch up field work. If you don't need a sharp point, A.G. Russell sells a mini crockstick kit.

I actually use a piece of ceramic from old thermocouples from our furnaces at work. About 3" long oval shaped. Works great and free!

I had one of the Gatco ceramic sharpeners in my sharpening kit on my last deployment to Iraq and used it more than my DMT diamond rod. Its a great sharpener for fast touch ups and is really light weight. Worked well to touch up my Striders in SV30 and my Bucks in 420HC. IIRC I bought it about six years ago at the Ft Bragg MCS for $5.99.
