Recommend a good knife

I lost my pocketknife some time ago, and I can't remember the brand name. I need a recommendation for a good quality knife that keeps its edge. I'm looking for a single blade knife, about 3 inches long (blade), with a locking mechanism. Any suggestions?

There are so many good knives that fit that criteria, it is hard to say. What is your price range? I like S30V for an affordable blade, but those will run you a bit more than some other steels.

OMG, this thread could go hundreds of pages.

I know it's an honest question, but, please, tell us what you plan to do with the knife, how you plan to carry it, where you will use it, and HOW MUCH YOU CAN SPEND. Then we can suggest some knives more closely tailored to your needs, not our collectively expensive passions.

Like, get a Sebenza. It's just $400.

Otherwise, you'll get a kazillion responses about from fans of a particular make or model that will be totally useless to you. The knife market is saturated with models, new ones coming every month, and more makers than have ever existed before.

It's really all about what you specifically need - so be specific.

wow um i can recommend a few hundred catalogs that might have what your lookin for,
give these guys their due credit, get specific and they'll find your knife.

Welcome to the forum. A price range and what you'd be doing with knife would help narrow down some choices.

A few thoughts...

$15-20 = Spyderco Byrd Meadowlark FRN or Kabar Dozier

$25-$35 = Boker Trance or Spyderco Tenacious or Kershaw Junkyard dog

$45-60 = Spyderco Delica/Native or Benchmade Mini Grip.

Also the Kershaw Leek, Chive, Shallot, etc.

Spyderco Tenacious/Delica/Endura on the midrange. Look at the Byrd lineup for some particularly good lower priced knives.

Benchmade mini-grip. About $60

Once you name your price range we can make a better recommendation. In general, for someone who just wants a good every day working knife at a good price, I always recommend a Spyderco Delica or Benchmade Mini Griptilian if you insist on having a made in USA product (Delica is made in Japan but Spyderco is an American company). But these days I'm really appreciating fixed blade knives.

I never used to even look at them; I was all folders, but I changed my mind. A lot of people stonewall them, seeing them as weapons or impractical, but if you have the right sheath it's very practical. There are many that are pocket carry that I've seen. Anyway, if you can consider looking for a small fixed blade instead. It's likely you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Benchmade Griptillian, either fullsize or Mini, Kershaw Leek, Spyderco Delica

theres my two cents

Cheers!

My vote goes to the spyderco native, it's 40bucks at walmart and has FRN scales and a s30v blade which has great edge holding capabilities.

Since you did not specify a price range, I will advise you to visit the Spyderco and Benchmade websites and see if you can find something you like and that is affordable to you. If you cannot find ANYTHING you like among these two manufacturers' huge selection, then get back to us because then it starts to get interesting...

In addition to price, it helps if you can specify weight for this 3" knife, because the weight will influence your mode of carry. Anything under 3 oz can ride inside dress pants pocket without visible sagging. Between 3 to 6 oz you can clip it to your pocket. Over 6 oz and a belt sheath would be more comfortable.

I love my Kershaw OD-1 and Skyline. They are currently my top 2 EDC knives. Both are ~3" blades. Both knives are Sandvik 14C28N steel (good steel, maybe a 1/2 step above AUS8), are non assisted opening (flippers), are very smooth and fast to deploy, came sharp out of the box, easy to sharpen and takes a nice edge, holds the edge well enough, have phosphor bronze bushings for smooth opening and have grippy g-10 handles. The OD-1 is a frame lock with a lock bar stabilizer (like the Hinderer) and has a flipper that disappears into a recess that makes for very clean lines. The Skyline as very light weight (almost disappears in your pocket) and is a liner lock. I can seem to put either down. Lockup on them is solid. I highly recommend them to anyone looking for a high-value folding knife. The OD-1 is $40 and the Skyline is $35 @ Wally World and both made in the USA.

You'd think I was on the Kershaw payroll as much as I praise and recommend these 2 models. :p :D But I'm just trying to spead the word on a couple of great high-value knives.

Small Sebenza if you have some money to put down.
Kershaw leek, Benchmade Mimi Persidio, Benchmade Mini Griptillian, Spyderco Rookie, Spyderco Delica, Benchmade Sequel, there are so many choices.
My personal favorite is the Spyderco Para Military.
