before an ESEE junglas and machete.. i was rocking this golok .. if u aim under 25$.. +1 for what brooksknives said
for comfortability factor.. i would eventually replace it by an ESEE Machete.. the handle is much more comfortable to the hands after hours of destruction in the woods :)

I've had this for a couple weeks and love it, I chipped the blade thrashing a printer but it was an easy fix.. I've since stripped the blade, its pretty stout..

but for your first machete to see if its for you, try a Tramotina 14" bolo machete, if you want a point get the 14"-16" bush machete..

Condor!

I have a ESEE Lite Machete, guess who they trust to supply the blade! Anyway there is a whole range of machetes available from Condor which all cost under $25 and it wouldn't be hard to find one that would suit your needs.

For the ESEE Lite Machete without the expensive micarta handle and with a cheaper price:

For a heavier version that would be more suitable for chopping (but heavier to swing at foliage):

Whatever style you get - the Condor machetes are good stuff.

I got the ESEE due to its convex grind and nice micarta handles. It works very well and the handles are obviously an upgrade from the cheaper ones and I have heard that they are a lot more comfortable with heavy use, but I have to say that I was surprised with how dull it was out of the box. But if you want something cheaper, I would get the condor or whatever blade they use.

but I have to say that I was surprised with how dull it was out of the box.

Mine wasn't hair whittling sharp or anything - but it did have a reasonable edge. Of course I sharpened it regardless - some say it isn't necessary for a machete, but I like all of my knives to be 'shaving sharp'.

Condor, Hansa, Imacasa, Tramontina, and Bellotto are all great brands. The Condors have better F&F than the others usually, but at a higher price, especially if you want the sheath with it. The Marble's machetes with the orange blades are pretty good also. Their blades are made by Imacasa. All of those can be had for 25 bucks or under. For your intended purposes, something in the 14-16" (blade length) would be perfect.

Condor Eco-Survivor would be my pick for a full out machete. I don't really consider the golok a machete, as at 1/4 inch thick it isn't really the best slasher.

The Condor EcoSurvivor uses the same blade as the ESEE. :)

Probably what I'd go for, but also have no regrets on having bought the ESEE-lite machete. It really is comfy and mine came sharp. Not in love with the sheath, but its functional. Will buy the condor leather sheath eventually but that is 75% of the cost of the machete....

I have an Ontario,WM cheapo,Marble and my son got Gerber forXmas. I love the Ontario and the Marble is OK. The WM model is not much and the Gerberis untried. It was very dull and I have sharpened it some but so far it does not impress. Go with Ontario.

I have an Ontario, and as far as I know, they are still below $25
