I'm thinking of adding a hawk bill to my collection. Can anyone make a recommendation? I'm leaning toward an MOD Lady Hawk.

Thanks,
Clay

Take a look at the Spyderco Harpy. I have the G-10 version (discontinued but can still be found for around $50) and I love it! This is one tough knife and very useful.

The Ladyhawk is a little small for me to open easily, try to get the feel of one before you buy.

I would NOT classify the Lady Hawk as a Hawkbill knife. Yes, it has a similar shape, but it isn't really in the same style. These knives were designed for sailor and gardeners who have to cut loose hanging things (plants and rope) quite often. The MOD is quite small for a working blade. I would also recommend looking at Colombia River's SeaHawk 1 (large) or 2(small) I have one and it is a good knife.

I have a Spyderco G-10 Civilian. It is a great knife. Very well made with a flat profile so it is easy to carry, even in dress clothes. My edc is a SIFU which is very large so when I cant cary that I go for the Civilian.
Camillus also made a hawk bill CUDA, I have a spear point one in damascus and it seems to be a very good knife.
Just some thoughts ....good luck

Hi!

I must throw my vote in for the Emerson P-SARK, i don't own one (yet...) but it does have the wave, which make it the fastest opening knife available.

And it has got a great sure-grip handle too, i don't think that you can go wrong with that!

And i agree that the MOD is a tad too small, i wouldn't get it unless it was an auto.

I have two, the Spyderco Matriarch and the CRKT Seahawk.

The Spyderco is more of a fighting knife, but the Seahawk is a great knife in ATS-34.

Have Max Burnett forge you a Castrator..run a search in the custom forum on Castrator and check out the one he made me. Its a great knife.

If you want it for work, go for the Spyderco Harpy or Merlin. If you are going for defense purposes only, go for the Ladyhawk. The Civilian and Matriarch are not really Hawkbill blades, they are reverse S. They are not designed for, nor are they suitable for any utility purposes.
Good Luck,

The G 10 Harpy is tough to beat. You can get one for under 50.00 on Ebay. AWESOME cutting power in a small package. Very high quality too! The Matriarch/Civilian are more of an S curve and do not have much utility application. The best hawkbill folder imho is tne Microtech Hawk. It is unreal. The handle fits my hand too well. I feel like Wolverine. It is the ultimate non- custom hawkbill. They ain't cheap, and not easy to find, but you will love it.

Have a look at the Cricket. Reverse S, 1.875". I've carried mine for the past 4 months, and find it the best utility use knife.

The tip allows fine work, the belly provides force. The tip allows a pull cut. With serrations, the curved tip allows to you continue pulling, without it coming off.

The Cricket is a spefically utility knife. it's size makes it too small for SD, but the Matriach is the next step up. Exact same design.

What's sharper? Your Mind, or my Spydie?

Check out the Kershaw Talon if you can find one. It doesn't have an extreme curve on the blade, but it stays sharp and it's very strong with titanium slabs over stainless steel liners.

It comes plain or combo edge, and there's a modified version with what is supposed to be a bottle opener notch on the top of the blade, but looks a lot like an Emerson Wave ...

If you don't mind a fixed blade, check out Neil Blackwood's site,awesome blade's and sheath's!!! He's got a thing for Hawkbill's!

Vampyre Wolf, if you try to use your Civilian at work, I think that you will be very dissapointed. The cricket works because the blade doesn't taper down until the very tip. The Matriarch and Civvie have longer, paper thin tips which make them more susceptible to breaking. BTW, the Kestrel is one heckofa knife! I love that modified Wharncliffe.
