You could say I'm a fan of Kershaw knives. I love their designs, but I only have one, a partially serrated stainless Leek. That's about to change though.

What I would like:
Assisted opening w/ thumb studs
Nice blade steel
Moderate price (< $100)
About the size of the Leek, could be smaller, or a tad larger...

What I don't care for:
Serrated edge
Coating on blade (maybe)
Odd colors

Does anyone have any ideas? I was looking at another Leek, with composite blade...and it looks great, I just wanted to hear some other opinions.

Thank You,
Will

The composite blade leek in great. I switch between that and the kershaw skyline as my edc. The skyline isnt A.O. but once you get used to the flipper it is just as fast and its a lot of knife for the price. The blade steel on the skyline isnt "high end" but it gets sharp very easy and holds a decent edge.

try a blur. they come in good handle colors and steels including SG2. you won't regret it, and it is assisted opening with thumb studs.

and welcome to forums btw. lock your wallet up.

Ooh, I just found the Mini Mojo...stainless steel handles with G10 inserts. 440A recurve blade. But, can someone tell me about the locking mechanism? I've never seen anything like it before.

Thanks again,
Will

I recommend the Blur in S30V or SG2.
Great size, great build quality, great steel.

I like the fact that it's a bit larger than the Leek which is also a great knife.
More all around utility.

I'd avoid 440A blades because they don't hold their edge for very long.
And Kershaw has not used 440A for a while now; they switched to Sandvik 13C26 in its place.

That is the same stud lock found on the Bumps and Offset. It will lock up rock solid each time you open it, and is truly ambidextrous. Somewhere in the Kershaw sub-forum, the designer, Ken Onion talks about the strength of the lock, and how it's positioned before the pivot for extra strength. There is a safety on the MM's, and it's unique to the MM, as it's integral with the flipper.

The Mini Mojo (440A) and it's newer version, the Mini Mojito (13C26 with a Born On Date of August 2007 or later) are great "little big" knives. I have 2, and are quite happy with them.

The Blur mentioned above is also a great choice. 13C26, S30V, or if you can find one, SG2 blade steels are available. Thumb studs, as per your request, and slightly larger than the Leek.

As for the difference in steels, the 440A is the easiest to sharpen, and will take a razor edge, just as the SG2 will. However, the 440A won't hold an edge as long as the 13C26, S30V, or SG2. Also, as you move up in blade steel, they tale a little longer to get a proper edge. So I'd take into consideration the use and your ability to sharpen the blade. There's nothing wrong or bad about the 440A, ya just need to be able to sharpen it!

All are under $ 100, and meet your requirements.

That's the Kershaw Stud-Lock.
It engages a "lip" on the frame of the knife when in the open position.
To close, you move the Stud-Lock forward slightly, so it moves off of the lip.
Then you can close the knife.

The Stud-Lock is spring loaded and moves within a slot in the blade.

I like it a lot and apparently so does Kershaw.
They use it in their Offset, Speed Bump and Spec Bump too.

I totally agree with the Blur, but .................... no one mentioned the Cyclone or the Mini Cyclone. Its got thumb studs and speed safe and you can switch it to a manual opener if you want or need to. 13C26 is its blade material. It also has a flipper.
Flippers are great I almost never use the thumb stud unless I want to open the blade slowly. Usually it's because sheeple are present.

Also it's a little smaller but the Scallion is a great little knife.
It also has speed safe, thumb studs and a flipper. Try using a flipper they are addictive, and fun !!!
Also Kershaw has a Damascus blade coming soon for the Scallion if you want something special.

That Mini Mojo is a cool knife. The stud lock is pretty sweet! You'll like it a lot. It might take you a few days getting the hang of it though; I kept reaching for the liner lock on my Speed Bump, which wasn't there. The stud lock is definitely strong.

I know most of us have some sort of knife budget, but Kershaw Knives are like Lay's Potato Chips; you can't have just one. With that said, start making a Kershaw wish list, and treat yourself to a cool Kershaw every once in a while. Limiting yourself to one, or two, just isn't going to happen. All of the knives suggested 'til now are all outstanding knives, but if you could lose the thumbstud requirement, I'd recommend the Shallot. It's like a Leek on steroids!

Good luck, I'm sure you'll be happy with whatever you pick.

Welcome!

Good suggestions so far...;)

Also check out the Shallots...the all-black is pictured in my sig, but it's also available in uncoated stainless. :D A little larger than the Leek, A/O, flipper-only, and built like a tank...

Ray :)

+1 for a shallot. or if you wait a while you could get a composite blade shallot. Or both! :D

CB Leek is dead sexy

still waiting on CB Shallot ...

Um, no BoxANT, you see, a CB Shallot would be a "Dead Sexy", but a CB Leek is just a Leek, no matter how good it looks.:D Two totally different designs, dude;)

HEHE, couldn't resist. Brad oughta like this.

Cheers,
Jonny
