My brother is looking for the last fix blade he'll need to buy. He balked at my suggesting that Busse Combat is the only choice out there. Personally I wouldn't put my life behind any other brand. I'm sure there are some decent fixed blades for around $200 though. I'm just not familiar or concerned with anything else out there. :D I say $200 because he thinks he can do better than the cheapest 6" Busse which is gonna run him $300 or more.

So... please suggest some (production) knives which fall in the 6"+ blade length category, suitable for harsh tasks involved in survival, hunting, hiking, camping etc. I'm looking for well known, respected brands and models. Preferably full tang and a handle material equally suited to harsh tasks.

Fallkniven makes robust knives that fit that categories that metioned. Since he's looking for a knife in the 6+ inch range, the A1 is there to fit the void.

Checkout the ESEE-6. ~$110-120. Fallkiven, as Barny says is excellent as well...

He can order 3 or 4 BECKER BK-02 knives and will last 3 or 4 lifetimes for the same price as those safe queens. just sayin'..... They are 1/4" of toughness and comfort and wrapped in a 5" blade. Have him take a look. They are easy to Mod as well.

Can pick one up for about $60 !!!!

Nice... ESEE and Fallkniven. Two brands I've heard a lot about. How are their warranties? You can't beat a Lifetime unconditional warranty from Busse.

Unforunately Fallkniven has 2 year limited warranty, that covers defects during the manufacturing.. I've everything the company advises against and it is shaving sharp and comes back for more.

ESEE has one of the best warranties in the business, it breaks = new knife.

ESEE 6. If a bigger blade is what he wants, the Junglas is a good choice.
If he needs big and can handle custom, Bill Siegle does a mad heat treat on 5160 and he could get whatever design he wanted.
The ESEE warranty, BTW, is excellent. Great people over there. I'd put it equal with Busse (and yes, I've owned and really love Busse blades).

You can't go wrong with a falkniven ( especialy the a1 ),esee, becker or even scrapyard if you don't mind searching the exchange day and night.

I love my Busses but there certainly are other brands - and at a much lower price - that are reliable, tough and functional.
Besides Busse I own knives by Cold Steel (Trail Master, Recon Scout, SRK and others) Kabar (Large bowie) and Ontario (RD9). All of them are very good camping/survival knives. I hear nothing but good things about ESEE, Becker, Bark River, and I'm sure you will get plenty of other suggestions.
Your brother is right for not wanting to shell out the money for a Busse. That's a knife you get to when you've tried many others. :D

Becker. BK9 or BK7 meet your criteria and then some. BK2 is 5" of pure quarter inch thick monster and if I could choose only one, that's the one I'd go with.

Anyway, here are the BK9 and BK2. My son's BK7 is around here somewhere but I don't have a pic of that one handy. Lifetime warranty / Ethan and Toooj are on here all the time and take care of you. Can't go wrong and you are WAY under your budget.

Though if you break an ESEE in a stupid way and send it in for warranty, Jeff and the gang at the ESEE forum will ridicule you. Good deal!

The humor of it has to be worth something but just like with Becker knives - don't do something stupid and you should be golden. :D

Under $200 SHTF blade Himalayan Imports ASTK or 18"CAK maybe an M43. A Bahadur Knife or Cherokee Rose if you want more western style.
If you want to go smaller than that look in the makers section at Landi Knives or Andy(Fiddleback forge)

there are a great many. there are even people out there who believe that there are better (or certainly equal) knives other than Busse available at a much more reasonable price.

the Fallkniven A1 would satisfy his needs.

heck, i rekon a Ka-Bar USMC would probably satisfy his (and your) needs.

unless he's a baton-through-concrete kind of knife (ab)user, a Mora Clipper would satisfy most requirements. you could buy 10 or more of them for $200.
