Recommend a knife to go in a bugout bag

I am looking for a relatively good quality knife that is fairly inexpensive to go into a bugout bag and stay there. I was thinking something along the lines of a crkt or maybe gerber. I want something that is a fixed blade, pretty stout, and with a partially serrated blade. Thanks for any suggestions.

I stick a Benchmade Rant in one of my BOB's. It's not partially serrated, but then I don't like serrated knives.

Maybe look at a SOG Seal PUP.

I looked at a lot of different knives before picking up a Gerber LMF II for my kit.

I can't say I agree with all of his testing methods, but I have to admit the LMF II took a heck of a beating.

If you are willing to loose the partially serrated part (I don't see any purpose for serrations on a survival knife) then a Mora would be an excellent knife. My truck emergency box has a stainless Mora and a Rat Cutlery RC-4.

Though a Mora is inexpensive (about $12), they are amazingly strong and made of very nice steel. I use my Mora while hiking more than any other knife I own!

While I'm a big fan of the Frosts Clippers, that X-ray that was recently posted in a different thread makes me think seriously about stocking up on some Eriksson knives. They all seem to have much longer tangs than the plastic-handled Frosts do.

Any fixed blade hunting knife will do - preferably the simple drop point, about 4 inches. If its over $40 dollars, you'll have money left over for other more important gear, like water purification equipment. Soaking $100 or more in a knife that sits unused in a bag all day is a gratuitious toy, not a tool. And if the bag is stolen, confiscated, or accidently forgotten somewhere, it's not a huge loss. It's also not a major indicator of some evil intent when viewed by an LEO - unlike most mall ninja toys packed with 1% solution gear in a tactical callout bag dragged around by 5.11 wearing wannabees.

Keep your bugout stuff simple, and you will have good, simple tools to use with the level of your skill.

+1 for Sog Seal pup around 55 bucks, partially serrated.

I've beaten the heck out of the pup on the top, can't break it. Kydex or nylon sheath included.

Here's my choice:

Cold Steel Bushman

RAT RC-6/5/4/3 would be my top picks. Best production FB beyond Busse imo.

I don't know about you...but I wouldn't want anything cheap that can break on me for a 'last ditch survival knife'.

Moras are VERY strong for half tang knives. I'd pick up a ka-bar utility in 7 in. Tough knife, made in the USA, 1095, full tang pinned at the bottom. Cheap, like $60-70.

+1 for the Gerber LMF II, since you want something serrated.

+1 on the BUCK Nighthawks. For the money they are stout usable work horses! You can get them in several sizes. They have thick spines, so batoning is no problem. It's Bucks tried and true 420HC which many folks here including myself, think is a great knife steel. The handles have excellent grip retention and comfort factor.

If you like the Nighthawk, snoop around your local Wal-Marts. Lately all the ones around here have put them on clearance for $19.00.
