I am looking for a 14-16" blade knife/dagger.
No show pieces something that is tough and reliable. Cost around 200.00 ? Either production or not. What is out there with this blade size. Can be double edge or single with a slight curve. Recommendation welcome.

14"-16" overall length or cutting edge??

Also, welcome to the forums.

14-16" blade IS A HUGE knife. You probably want to take a look at Rob Criswell's Wakizaski, excellent construction and A2 tool steel.

Thanks for the welcome. Yes Blade only 14 - 16 inch.

There must be a custom maker around here who will make you a 14" dagger. Ask for it in the "Custom knife forum".

Core, you may wish to take a look at the daggers and knives offered by Lutel, a firm in the Czech Republic. The address is http://www.lutel.cz/index2e.htm Their blades are all forged, I believe, and I have heard good things about their swords over on NetSword ( www.netsword.com ) and, especially, on SwordForum ( www.swordforum.com ), but nothing on their knives or daggers. Of course, what you seek is damned near a shortsword, in any case. The prices that Lutel quotes are are in Czech currency which is 37CZR to $1US. The blade measurements are in centimeters which convert to inches at 2.54cm to the inch, so that the 40cm scramaseax that they sell for 3700CZR is a scramaseax with a 15 3/4" blade selling for $100 plus shipping. BTW, a scramaseax was a very common knife in Northern Europe from ca. 300CE to ca. 1100CE that was used for everything from small eating knifes to kitchen knives to utility knives to swords.

Core,
Welcome to the forums!
You may get a better response if there was some info about possible intended use. In that blade length your description could fit into short swords of various origin or choppers of MANY varieties. More info please!

I want to thank you all for your suggestion. The sax from Lutel was very helpful. This is something that fits in with what I am looking for. Intended use was a all purpose tool when you can have only take one item on a camping trip also to complete my collection that I have going.

Have send off a e mail to Lutel on the sax. If anyone has one I would be interest in hearing about it.

Thanks again.

Core, Lutel has 2 seaxes, one at 50cm and one at 40cm. both costing 3700CZK. 50cm works out to 19.69", while 40cm works out to 15.75". Both appear to come with nice scabbards. If a seax interests you, look into the Paul Chen model from CAS-I. I have one, for which I paid $70, shipping included. These are made in Hanwei, Manchuria on automatic forges out of old railroad tracks. They are durable as Hell and very nicely finished for the price. You might want to look here just to see one and then use Yahoo or another browser to search out prices. http://www.renstore.com/cgi-bin/Renstore.storefront/3b30cde500577074273f40d40a7306a5/Product/View/CAS&2D1075GT

Although not quite as long, you may like the Hays Government or Parachete
Hays Knives can also make the blade longer on the Government for you.
Take a look and hope you find the right knife!
