Recommend a knife?

Hey, I noticed you guys get this a lot, so I apologize, but I was wondering if I could get some help picking out a good knife?

Basically I'm looking for something that is usable as a general utility knife, is small/light enough to be a daily carry in a slung bag, can be used in self-defense situations, and has a nice menacing look (this is basically just for me :) ).

With these in mind, at first I was considering getting a SpyderCo Civilian but apparently that isn't usable as a general utility knife? Now my frontrunner is the SpyderCo Spyderhawk, which is also nice and cheap, but I'm wonder if it's style of curve would make it ineffective for defense (I sure like the look though)?

Right now my only knife is really my Leatherman, but that seems to be a bit lacking in the appearance department by my reckoning, and it seems like a real knife would be a fair bit more effective in the event I really need it for defense.

Edited to clarify

Benchmade 806D2. Some may tell you that it's too heavy, but it's nothing compared to my B/S Large spearpoint weight wise.

Others that fit the bill: Spyderco Military and Police models.

and looks threatening enough to hopefully deter threats.
ALways remember that if you pull out a knife as a deterence, be prepared to use it, and accept the consequences of your actions. Threatening behaviour like pulling out a tactical blade will in many cases escalate an altercation, not deter one.
If you still want to go down that path, their are plenty of slashers and stabbers that will suit your requirements - happy hunting!

So the Spyderhawk doesn't really fit the bill I was suggesting? All 3 of those knives you recommended are fairly heavy, 50% heavier than the Spyderhawk/Civilian sort of range. Still if they'd fit the bill better then I suppose I wouldn't have any problem going in that direction.

That's certainly a good point. I suppose honestly, actual effectiveness in self-defense is what I'm really going for. The threatening look of the knife is really more for myself than anything else, I like the aesthetics of knives like the civilian. ;)

For a menacing look, you can hardly beat the Cold Steel Vaquero.

And it may be used as a utility knife too.

If it is going to be in a "sling bag", how about a fixed blade?? A Spyderco Perrin or Temperence, maybe a Benchmade Snody. Just some idea's. I had someone tell me my fully serrated Spyderco Endura looked "evil", if that helps any. :)
Good Luck, let us know what ya decide.

Blades

Chinook II.

I have never opened that knife without raising eyebrows.

It's hell for strong and has an excellent blade shape for SD.

Razor sharp factory edge of S30V steel.

6oz weight - not light, but definitely light enough for any carry mode.

It is the slickest, fastest opening lockback I have ever seen. With a little practice it can be opened via inertia.

Great price for the value that you get - only $100. Made in the U.S.A.

Regards,
bls

Cold Steel El Hombre, smaller version of the Vaquero, very menacing, very little utility, looks like the knife was made specifically for SD.

I really liked the smaller Vaquero, El Hombre, is it really not useful for utility? Alberto seemed to think at least the Vaquero was useful as a utility knife.

The fixed blades are nice, but somehow I just like the look of the folding blades better I think.

I like the Chinook II, it's very cool, but it sure is a lot bigger than the other blades I was considering, more than twice the weight of knives like the Hombre and the Spyderhawk. I do like it though, seems very well rounded, only downside being the weight, definitely one of the knives I'm still considering.

The weird recurve in the Vaquero makes it a great slasher, but it can be bad when you want some small or delicate cuts. The serrations are not great either.

What I meant to say is that the Vaquero is a menacing knife that will be a better for utility than the Spyderhawk or the Civilian. :)

How about a Benchmade 710?...Or if you can't spend that much money, how about a Benchmade 551 Griptilian?

I will second the 710, great knife for utility purposes and it is big enough to use for self defense if needed.

i'm not sure of your price range, but you could take a look @ the PE Spyderco Dodo...
it only weighs 2.5 ounces, the blade is just a bit over 2 inches long, so it's legal everywhere, but the handle is almost 4.5 inches long... so you have alot of control over the blade...
the shape of the blade is awesome... the "reverse S" design blade gives you the ability to make very precise cuts with the point (also picks splinters out well) and the inward curve below it, and the outter curve @ the bottom of the blade has the same cutting ability as most other knives... and the S30V steel makes it very strong... it's gonna be one of the sharpest knives you'll ever take out of a box... also, it looks pretty intimidating, and can certainly do alot of damage to someone attacking you...
the Spyderhole allows you to open the blade very easily with one hand, and i suppose you could even "flick" it open if you needed to...
the compression lock is also pretty interesting... it's an extremely solid lock, and with some practice it can be closed with one hand...
the G10 handles are textured to give a beautiful grip in wet or dry conditions... they're also very ergonomic for a comfortable grip in a number of different holds...
the wire clip is really great, surprisingly strong, reversible, and if you're planning on carrying it in a bag, you can attach something to it, like a small LED light or some other small tool...
it can usually be found on the internet for around $80/$90, altho i got mine for $60 by getting it in a For Sale forum on a website, such as this one... you could always keep an eye out...

see this thread for some reviews/pictures of the Dodo...

i might appear to be overhyping this 'cause it's a personal favorite of mine, but it's a really great knife that fits your lightweight/intimidating/utility requirements...
