I'm looking for an EDC type knife. I just picked up a Military and it's not *exactly* what I'm wanting. The blade is slightly longer than I would like and so is the handle. I also wish the handle was slightly bulkier/thicker. Would maybe a Manix or Paramilitary fit the bill?

Sounds like you want a beefy handle with a compact sized blade. You should check into the Lil Temperance. It has a beefy handle and a 3" leaf blade that is still stout. I didn't like the Lil Temp but most people do.

The Mini Manix is a current production knife that IMHO out does the Lil' Temp in every way except weight. It is a little heavier.

The Para is an odd ball knife IMHO. I have owned two and I have gone back and forth between thinking it is almost perfect to thinking it is full of flaws and mistakes. They are supposed to be comming out with a Para II so maybe you should wait on the Para to see what developes.

I am a big fan of the navigator. Very compact, yet stout little blade. The new Lava also looks good with a blade just under 2 inches.

I guess I want the Spyderco version of the Benchmade Ritter Grip, and the Military seems like the Spydercom version of the BM 806...

:)

How about a Native III?

I have a Paramilitary, a Mini-Manix and a Lil' Temperance.
The Para is the lightest, the Manix is the heaviest, the Temp in between. The Para is also the thinnest and narrowest, with the Manix the widest by a little and the Temp the thickest by a little. The Temp also has the shortest blade and the longest cutting edge. The manix and Para both have finger choils for choking up, where the Temp does not. The Temp clip is RH only, tip up or tip down. The Mini-Manix has four way clip position and the Para (so far) is RH tip down only. I like the Lil' Temp, but being a discontinued model, they are harder to find. Of the two you mentioned, the Mini-manix would probably be closer to what you said you wanted. The full size Manix is nearly as long as the Military, much wider and a lot heavier.
Hope this helps a little.

If you're looking for a smaller Military, the para is the obvious choice. I actually slightly prefer the para for the compression lock. On a budget, the para can be substituted by a Native.

Definitely don't forget to look at the d`allara DP.

Well those guys have pretty much covered some great possibilities for a great Spyder EDC. I do agree with Kevin if you want an EDC with heavy duty capabilities that the Lil Temperance would be an excellent choice. I would try to get one with an S30V blade however because the other blade steel that they used in that knife was 440V and it is a literal nightmare to sharpen  .

Some of the others that they covered are great choices too. Particularly the Mini Manix. That knife definitely has some muscle that you might need which is comparable to the LiL Temperance. Plus it has a slimmer handle than the Lil T does.

Now if you want the best of both worlds and you find cutting chores in which you need a serrated blade occasionally then I urge you to take a look at the C-44 full sized Dyad model. It has one fully serrated blade and one beautiful plain edged, flat grind blade as well. That is my main EDC and it is one great knife. But do indeed get some Spyderco catalogs and look over the recommendations that the other brothers have already covered. Good Luck and welcome to the Spyder clan :)

Rats, I forgot the DDP - must have been because I didn't have that one on me at the time :o
It would probably fit the bill nicely.
Oh, and don't listen to JD, I don't have any trouble sharpening 440V. :D But then, I may not be quite as picky about my final edge, and I don't use a Sharpmaker either. ;)

Well, I got the chance to handle the Para, a Manix and a Mini-Manix today. The Para didn't do a whole lot for me, but WOW, the Manix is a monster. When I was holding it, I started getting that "I've found *the one* feeling". It's exactly what I was looking for, and it fits my hand perfectly. I'm not used to a lockback, but it sures looks like it's a strong one. When I took out my Ritter Grip, it felt cheap and plastic by comparison.

So I'm buying a Manix and a Mini too. How can Spyderco make a knife that overbuilt with an S30V blade for a street price of ~$125??

manix or mini manix are great but heavy have them both for cost and toughness try the caly 3 it is light and very tough it is also cheaper than the manix plus it looks less monster like in the edc roll.

well, one of the things I like about the Manix is how big and thick the handle is...

I love my Manix. It just feels so...... precise. I guess the best description I have ever heard is "it locks up like a bank vault."

When I need a lighter knife, I carry my Yojimbo.

I am holding out for a ZDP-189 Caly 3 with carbon-fiber handles, though. Set up for LH, tip up carry.

(Gee, he don't want much, does he?) ;)
