I know how much everyone loves Stockmen, but I had never really been interested in one. Now that I am interested in them, I do not know what to look for. What blade setups/sizes/brands/steels do y'all prefer?
Thanks for your help!

I like Case bone stockmans in chrome vanadium CV steel. I also like the Old Timer Schrade USA stockman. I find that Schrade carbon steel easy to work on stones, and get razor sharp results.

for me Case medium CV in yeller or the Jumbo amber bone also in CV, i have a mini in stainless that is also an excellent little knife. All my Case have been razor sharp outta the box and excellent fit and finish.
good luck with the hunt

As for as stockmens go, I would go with the medium stockmen for easy of carry. The Cases are perfect. Pen Clip and Sheepfoot blade is a great combination. It offers the most cutting edge to handle ration.

Personally, I prefer the 2 bladed serpentine jack.

God Bless

One of these three would work very well. Queen-made Moore Maker 5301, Queen #9, and Queen #26

If you like something larger, the Great Eastern #53 would be a great choice.

You get a lot of bang for your buck with a Case.

If I could only have one stockman, it would be a Case large stockman, with CV blades and amber bone handle slabs. My only complaint is that the sheepfoot blade sticks out too much when closed, but that's easy to fix by carefully filling the kick.

Case's medium stockman in chesnut bone with CV blades is a great choice if you're looking for a smaller knife.

I've also had good experiences with Boker stockmen, but they tend to be less consistent in fit and finish than my Case knives.

I've recently started using a Schrade Walden stockman, my only knife in this pattern and have learned to really appreciate it. Its a great pattern!!!

My CASE Medium Stockman, the serpentine type, gets a lot of use.The stainless one I have in Amber Bone is really useful-filed the kick down a bit on the sheepfoot to make it nestle more closely. Also got the cv model in Bonestag which is a wonderful handle, what a disgrace that CASE have discontinued this option! I know I'm in the corner of minority here but I prefer stainless as I eat with my knife, just choice though.

CASE Medium is the right size and weight for my needs,if you have big hands or rough working tasks then the full size might be better,it's a bit of a monster though...Böker do a large 4" which is smaller than the CASE,has carbon and is inexpensive.Apoloosa and Grand Canyon Bone look very good on these knives.

I have a brown jigged bone Case medium stockman (mod 32) with cv blades that I have used a lot lately. I also have a Queen #9 stockman with D2 and cocobolo that is 4 inches long. Bouth of these is nice knifes but the Case is realy the knife that has showed me the usefulness of a good stockman.

I carry an A.G. Russell stockman. Very solidly built with carbon blades.

It all depends on what you want in the end?

Are you looking for a real user for rough work outdoors, a beater of a knife thats rugged as a Sherman tank? If so, the Buck 301 is a great knife at 3 7/8ths inches closed, not too big, not too small. A little more compact is the Buck 303 cadet. A very great knife thats as ruggged as its big brother.

If your looking for something a bit more finished with good looks and great cutting ability, go for a CV bladed Case. Case is at a high point of fit and finish of thier knives, and the last Case I bought was "knock your socks off" beautiful.

Think of the Buck as an old GI 1911, and the Case as a nice blued and walnut stocked Browning high power. Both are good, both will do the job. One is just better looking. Personal choice in the end.

As Jackknife says...

For a much fancier 4" hard worker is the #9 Queen with lovely amber bone and D2 blades
Then same size as the 303 is the fancier Queen #26 again with bone and D2, but it is not as tough as the 303.

GEC do a frankly behemoth sized Cuban Stockman 4.25 in both carbon&stainless,as ever a wide range of scales and the acrylics look good on this pattern too.

Thanks for your help!

I like Older Schrade USA slipjoints. For stockman I like the medium size. The 34OT with spey, sheepsfoot, and clip in 1095 carbon is a great carry knife.

But my perfect stockman is the 44OT. Medium size with clip, sheepsfoot, spey, and a wharncliff.

A bit hard to find and can be pricy when you do (compaired to other used USA Schrades), but the ultimate stockman IMHO.

Mine is my most carried stockman.

If another company made one similar I'd bet it would be a winner.

On a traditional stockman I prerfer the Queen #9. If you try a 4" first then you can decide whether to go smaller or larger, or if your happy as is.

I tend to prefer the Whittler to the Stockman, but I do have 3 Stockmans, an older U.S. Schrade mini, a Northwoods med. (Made by Queen, I believe), & a Buck 301 Cadet.

For a working knife, it'd be hard to beat one of the U.S. Bucks (301 & 303), however the other ones mentioned are all great. It mainly depends on how much you want to spend & size.

While my red shield Henckel isn't a Stockman (It's a Whittler), I believe they do make a Stockman & so does Boker (Who, I believe, makes the red shield Henckels).

Sizewise, that's very subjective. Personally, I've found around 3.5" to be ideal, but I'd say between 3.5-4" is very pocketable while still giving you decent blade size.

Good luck.

Everybodies ideas are good, I like the knives mentioned, I just have to use my money for my knives of choice first and so far none has been left over. If anyone needs a Buck Stockman photo just holler'. 300Bucks

Thanks for all of the great recommendations guys! I think I'm going to go with a large Case Stockman with CV in Amber Bone for now, as i've had good luck with my Case knives. I'm definitely going to have to look at the Buck 301 and 303. I do wish i could find a good old Schrade, I really like that steel.
