A buddie of mine is looking for a multi blade pocket knife for whittling. He knows I'm a knife guy and asked me to recommend something. He knows nothing about knives, but he has whittled a ball in a cage and a ball and chain when he was a kid. Impressive. Turns out I know very little about traditional whittling knives and figured I'd as you good folks for some recommendations. Thanks in advance.

My favorite is the GEC #62 Courthouse Whittler - nice long slender and usable wharncliff primary, and coping and pen secondaries, both of which are nice and thin. Nice handle length and shape for a comfortable grip for extended use. Might not be easy to find one though.
Another one I like is the Boker Carvers Congress. Feels great in hand, and its built like a tank. Nice selection of blades too.
But really, for me anyway, anything that has one small secondary curved blade and one small straight blade.

Id have to recommend the 6383 or the 6308 whittler patterns from Case. Definitely two of my favorites. The 6383 has the thicker blade and the stiffest springs (especially since the main rides on two springs) so it wont close on the digits as easy.

And at least one really pointy tip.
In addition to the #62 I'd add the #57 to the list (these come with clip or wharncliffe main blade).

But as long as the grinds are thin anything works.

I don't know what your friends budget is like, but another good option that's a little cheaper than the GEC but works just as nice are the Boker Tree Brand whittlers. I have one in Appaloosa bone that I like very much.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm going to write them down and pass them along to my friend.
