Recommend an EDC for an upscale antique store owner

So my parents have an upscale antique mall in Ohio. Mom makes dad wear nice duds to the
shop and everything. Dad carries a swiss army knife every day. Its a fine knife, one I've replaced at least once because he actually uses it.

But I'm thinking about whether there might be a smoother edc option for carry at the shop. More interesting and appropriate for the situation if that makes any sense. I know he has an old timer somewhere that he has had forever, but i wonder if it might not be easier for him to carry a knife to which he has no special attachment because, like I said, he uses his knife constantly.

Any suggestions?

If he likes Swiss Army knives that much, just keep going with that! No need to change his routine.
Oh, and where's this antique mall at? :D

I'm guessing that the SAK doesn't look old and antique enough?

If that's the case, if he likes the functionality of SAK, you might look into a US made older camper, best of all, one with jigged bone scales.

If he primarily uses the knife for the cutting blade, well then, that's a whole 'nuther kettle of fish. The thread instantly devolves into "name your favorite" traditional.

If that's where this is heading, you might talk to him about what he likes and doesn't like in terms of size, number of blades and such. I'd say, get him an Opinel and age it for him but that's nothing but my personal preference talking, as will be the case for the 73 suggestions for various GECs, 17 suggestions for various Case patterns and the 2 suggestions for Canal street patterns. ;^)

I figured this question would elicit a range of responses. The shop is in Delaware, Vanguard. I think I am hoping for a suggestion that is interesting. This is a guy that has in his personal collection items with provenance to the Continental Congress, General Jackson, and stuff like that. But it can't be too "interesting" to use.

You could get him an Alox SAK. They look a little classier than the standard red plastic ones. Or is it supposed to exude " antique"?

If he likes SAKs, find him a nice old Scout Knife with bone handles. It will be much like the SAK but will fit the antique style.

Get a traditional in the congress pattern. It has an awesome history and many important figures-including Lincoln-carried one. I believe Ford also carried a congress.

I like the sound of the Congress suggestion. Is that a Case pattern, or did other makers do those as well?

Congress knives are not specific to Case. Case makes three sizes of Congress knives. The medium Congress is a good mid sized pocket carry.

Boker makes a 4 blade Congress as well. I'm sure there are others.

Dave,

Does your father use the bottle and can opener 'blades'
If so a 'Scout' or 'Camper' as discribed with bone handles
The SAK Pioneer in Alox is also smart, and you can get then in colored Alox like black or red

The Boker Congress is 3 5/8" and there are many grades
The higher end grades are definitely classy
See Collector Knives

Lincoln had a 6 blade congress in his pocket when he was shot.

Maybe a nice stag handled or faux Tortoise Conductor from GEC? It's slim and elegant but a serious cutter.

Some other Gent's style knife. Go for a Fontenille-Pataud Laguiole, dozens of handle choices, not cheap though.....but beautiful.

Charlow if you go new and I really like old Robeson Cutlery Company. Nice older made in NY knives can be had in better condition for much lower prices than better known brands. I have several, one barlow that was recently booted from my pocket by the new Charlow which I hope to put as many years use as possible. Maybe it will be broken in at least before one of my boys gets it lol , the ebony looks real classy and is still a work horse.

For $349 Amazon sells a SAK Trekker with locking damascus blade and walnut scales instead of the red ones.

He's worn out more than one SAK in a lifetime, or he loses them in use? Either way, I guess you don't want anything too expensive.
