recommend full flat grind blade

I am working on some small 2.75" blade, approx 6" OAL. Full flat grind knives from 154-cm, prob gonna do a very thin edge on them. Spear point, trailing/upswept point, kinda persian style, and a mod warnie, a warnie with some slight belly. Email me if you want more details!

Since you specified a small fixed blade, I will recommend the Spyderco Moran in either the drop point(my favorite) or the trailing point. These knives are very thinly flat ground out of VG10(great stuff!), and come from the factory scary razor sharp. Plus, you can get one for about $60 anywhere. Next choice would be the A.G. Russell Deerhunter. Even in the AUS8A, they are wicked cutters. Plus, I think they are coming out with a VG10 version.

Spyderco makes several knives with full flat grinds. To wit:

- Spyderco Military (4", liner lock, large handle, CPM-440V steel)
- Spyderco Calypso Jr. (3", lockback, discontinued, VG-10 steel)
- Lum Chinese Folder (3.25"?, liner lock, VG-10 steel).

Of these three, the Military has the thickest blade, I think. But all three of these are very popular among the Spydernuts, with good reason!

Plus, if you go Spyderco, then you can really say that the "bug got you" :D (ok sorry for that)

Hope that helps,

Matthew

Darn! Sorry hd2k_va, guess I was reading faster than my brain was processing and missed the fixed blade specification...

Ok, the bug got me. I gotta have a knife. Please make recommendations for a small fixed blade knife with a full flat grind for light utility work. And I mean really full. I want the grind to go all the way down, or almost all the way, to the edge. The edge bevel should be practically non-existent. In other words, I want to be able to sharpen this blade as recommended in the Razor Edge Book of Sharpening.

I hate thick edges on small, utility knives. I love them on my Busse and Beckers, but this one will be for cutting rope, tape, whittling, etc.

Thanks

CS MAster Hunter comes to mind. Also, Marbles' Fieldcraft, which comes with a flat grind that terminates in a convex edge... but you won't have any complaints .:) Or, you might want to look at the wide selection of Scandinavian blades with flat grinds at ragweedforge.com.

Let me second that recommendation for the Spyderco Morans. My drop point is a great cutter for all sorts of utility tasks, really holds an edge, and weighs next to nothing.

Another vote for the Spyderco Moran drop point here. The Cold Steel Master Hunter is also worth consideration, as I am sure the other knives that have been suggested are, but I don't have experience with them myself.

Check with a custom maker who'll make you a blade in thin stock. You'll be able to specify how you want the blade made. By telling the maker what the blade is to be used for, he will have some idea of what processes & materials he should be thinking about as the two of you design the knife.

For instance, I've got a Sam Henson paring knife in the kitchen made from what looks like 1/16" 440C stock that is a devastating little slicer that only cost me $40. When I got it from him at a show, he gave me the two points he felt were requirements for a slicing blade that has to be very sharp - 1) full flat ground blade 2) very thin stock. If you find a custom maker whose perspective matches your views on what the blade should or needs to be (as Sam's did mine that day at the show) you'll easily be able to get made the knife you want.

I concur with those who like the Spyderco Moran blades in VG10 as a very sharp, flat-ground, commercially manufactured alternative to a custom blade. I got a used one in "like new" condition and it was screaming sharp right out of the box.

Don't forget the A.G.Russell "Deerhunter" . It's a fine knife available
in two lengths and two steels (Aus-8, Ats-34, and maybe soon Vg-10) .
Give them a look.

AG Russell also has the Bird & Trout, smaller than the Deer Hunter.
