Could you recommend to me a good hand forged tomahawk, preferabley one that isn't more than $30? I like the ones here: http://www.teachingdrum.org/OldWayWares/Hardgoods
I just don't really one to buy one from them, and their shipping seems a little pricey. I like the way the handle is too, so that you can take it off easyily and and also it tightens when in use, and the steel isn't too hard.

I bought a buck hawk from Dana Turner at http://www.fortturner.com/. Very reasonable price and I'm happy with the quality. I did reprofile the edge and it easily shaves hair now. Haven't done alot of chopping with it yet, but the hardness seemed right when I was reprofiling. I did mess around a little with it tonight on some dried fire wood that was fairly hard and it did well.

Hi of the two makers shown above the Turner hawks would IMO be the better buy
due to haveing a better shape for throwing all good hawks have the ability to remove the haft for carry as stated in OldWayWares/Hardgoods
unless they have been glued or wedged but then you run the risk of breaking the haft as explained on other posts good luck with your new hawk

grant4353what's a hammer pole hawk

grant4353 a hammer poll is were the opposite side to the blade there is a flat
or a hammer type extension hence HAMMER POLL and is used for tent peggs
and other light hammering jobs around a camp hope this helps

Finish on mine is better than that. I would guess it just depends on how it comes out of the cold forging process. Email Dana and he'll answer your questions.
I like the H&B hawks too. I may have to try one.

Ya I saw those, it says that they're aren't for splitting wood etc, just for throwing it seems. Says to use astraight pole for that.

Some fine tools there

I agree with rdg on the choice of the blade. If you are just using for throwing then the finish might not be a concern anyway. If you want a really nice one go to http://www.theblademaker.com/ They cost a little more but better steel.

Track of the Wolf has an excellent reputation in the "Rendezvous community" in the US. Make sure you pick the right hawk for your needs! Their gun kits are phenomenal. The H&B is a dead ringer. You can't go wrong with a HB. The Fort Turner "looks good" and it may be in the HB class. TOTW probably sells H&B or similar hawks as the Ft. Turner!

Think I'll get the HB shawnee, does it come sharp? What you guys use for to sharpen axes and hatchets in the field?
