Hey all, I apologize because I know this has probaply been discussed about 50 million times here.
Any ways, I'm looking for a new big (8-10" blade) heavyduty fix blade to replace my becker bk-4 machax. I'm not all to familiar with that many big fix blades as I am mostly a folder kinda guy. Right now I'm thinking either kabar large heavy Bowie or the "king" the bk-9. I am would be using it for some medium to heavy chopping and heavy battoning, aswell as prying, which I find myself doing quite often. I am open to other blades, but as stated above I do not know knifes of this type too well. I do have a restricting budget of around 70-80 bucks. I'm willing to go a little over but being a 14 year old with no steady income, cash Is few and far between. (Especially as I just bought myself the amazing zt 300).

Thanks

Maybe an Eswing hatchet would suit your needs better? When you need a knife, there's no substitute for a knife, I get that. Just trying to think outside the box and maybe offer a suggestion you haven't read a hundred times already.
The BK9 is an excellent knife, but if you're on a tight budget take a look at the similar Condor products.

Best luck deciding!

The Buck Hoodlum is made with a 10" blade of 5160 steel. A real survival--model built for chopping and Zombie proof. DM

My first choice would be the BK9, but you can't argue the logic and price of the marine raider. I may have to get one of those and make a better handle for it. You might also want to check out the Condor Boomslang.

I have both the 4, and the 9. I would definitely say, GET THE 9!!!!! I like the 4, but the 9 is a wayyyyy better chopper, the 4 can kick it's but at Batoning though....

what you are describing is the ontario marine raider.

The marine raider is a lot thicker than the bk9 which is good for prying. The marine raider is 1/4 inch thick.

The marine raider is a 10 inch blade and just about as good of chopper as the bk9 is, i can testify to this claim since i own both.

The ka-bar large heave bowie is ok but it is also made overseas where the ontario marine raider is made right here in the usa.

The ka-bar large heave bowie is also known to chip and i have seen videos where the blade chipped beyond repair.

The ontario marine raider is also the best priced bowie out there. At only $53 you get one of the best bowies made.

I ordered mine from walmart.com and in only i day it was delivered to my local store with free shipping.

i have beat my ontario marine raider and i have beat my bk9 and overall the marine raider has held up the best.

To me it is a better all around knife than the bk9 and way better than the machax.

Others here are going to lead you into their current favorite knife and brand because they do not know better. I am making a suggestion to you based on owning a few big knives and knowing what is best for the money.

Check out the entire ontario sp and next generation line and you will find some high quality, made in the usa knives at very good prices.

i am not a fan of the black coating and the first thing i did was remove the black coating with paint remover. If you like the black coating it is ok, lots of people like the black coating.

Ps. An estwing hatchet is also a fun tool to have.

thank you for your input (aswell as the rest of you)
Since posting ive done a bit of homework and found the ontario spec line. Im currently looking at the Gen2 SP52. looks like a great chopper with the blade shape and full 1/4" thick blade aswell as the ontario RTAKii. The RTAK looks absouloutly huge though so im going away from it. My local shop here in town has the SP52 on sale for $82. so im gonna pick it up before it sells out.
thanks

70-80$ can get you into one of these bad boys...

Sticking with Ontario but going a slightly different direction, how about the SP8? It's basically a big pry bar with a sharpened edge for chopping.

Love my rtak 2!!!! Can't beat the value and WHEN you grow weary of the sheath, you can upgrade to a Kydex or custom sheath

I'll second the Ontario line, I have several of the Spec Plus models & really like them. The Raider Bowie feels indestructible & is generally well thought of on this forum. The Sp 52 you're set on has better steel, better edge geometry, & a really nice heat treat for just a bit more. Good choice.

i can recommend you quite a few -

1) jack crain MCS Hollow handle 440c predator combat knife 2) Rober Parrish 440c hollow handle 8 inch survivor 3) CustomVaughn Neeley stag handled Bowie knife 4) Randall made knives Bear Bowie knife

I would get the Kabar Becker BK-9 or a larger short Condor machete (Pack Golok, Village Parang, or something along those lines). The BK-9 would be much easier to carry in the woods, but the Condor will probably chop better.
