I'm looking for a field coat. Here's what I want:

Color: Olive drab
Cargo pockets
Material: Cotton canvas
Zip-up, not button
Removable liner to change from coat to jacket

Anyone know of a good brand/specific article? Thanks

Sorry, but I don't have any links. Sounds like a military surplus may work for you, US stuff will all be camo though unless it's rather old.

Not sure how hard you want to use it.

I love the Filson and Barbour stuff. Not sure they make it in OD but I know Barbour makes it in a color close to it. Great stuff that will last a life time. Filson is better for hard use, Barbour is great, more $ though.

Hope that helps some.

I recommend the Gadgets & Gear Forum. ;) :D Moving this over yonder.

Thankee sir, my mind must be slipping  :D

Thanks for the reccommendations so far. The Filson #460 is at the top of the list right now

you'll like it very much, and for many many years. The only place I've found that sells anything more than $10 below retail is ebay. occasionally you can find a liner (expensive) in good condition for 25-50% of what it would cost new. coats are harder to come by.

I can't afford the Filson stuff, but I get a lot of good use out of Carhartt products. I really like this one; it doesn't have the removable liner, but hey - it's only around a hundred bucks, and the arctic quilt lining really does the job.

Yet another recommendation for Filson. My wife thinks I must be the official spokesman for them. Yes, they are expensive... but they are top quality and will last forever. I particularly love their safari cloth shirts and wool coats/vests.

Carhart. You could pick up a Carhart Arctic and a Carhart Ranch (for milder weather) for about $100 to $120 total for both.

why the need for olive drab? Cabela's Roughneck 3-in-1 Canvas Work Coat (item# 92-2347) looks nice for under $100, but is only available in hickory brown (a favorite of mine), hunter green, and black.

are you sure about olive drab, its a hard color to work with. I perfer netrual colors for outer wear.

I love Filson and sold it where I worked for years, but how anybody can actually move, walk, bend arms, bend knees or even think about taking a squat without scaring off every animal in the woods is beyond me. Their field coats come with their own wax too. I'm sure once broke in and beaten up against a tree they are perfect. Buy a Carhartt.
