Hi there,
i want to buy my first Fixed blade, and before i went out and bought something that turned out to be crap i thought i would ask here first.
i was just about to buy a CRKT M60 -14NK, when i read it was crap. so can anyone give me some advice,or recommend me some knives that fall into the same category as say the SOG SEALteam2000 and others? i don't want to get all mall ninja"ish" but i would like it to be quite a good knife.
(are the SOG seal knives anygood? i always wanted one. but they are 440C which turns me off

what is your price range?

ontario makes several models which are under 100.00.

kabar, spyderco, and benchmade all make reasonably priced fixed blades and are fine products. cold steel also makes many fixed blades that appear to be a great bang for the buck.

as far as sog, i think some are ok, some arent. ive never cared for their folders, but some of their fixed blades are fine.

440c is a good steel, given proper heat treatment and edge angle.

hey! stop following me around waiting for that sebbie to fall out of my pocket!!!

:)

i would prefer to stay under 150 USD, i like the kabars but there are so many that its overwhelming and i do not want to look like an idiot and choose the wrong one based on its looks. i would love a spyderco, do they make fixed blades? i want an emerson but to find an australian distributor is hard.

emerson fixed blades are not so easy to come by. you may have some luck finding the timberline version, but emerson produces very few fixed blades in his shop. (except for the kerambit)

spyderco makes a few fixed blades: http://www.spyderco.com/search/index.php

dont feel overwhelmed, or more to the point, dont feel bad for feeling overwhelmed.

if you like the kabars, just pick one with the handle/blade you like. there really is no "wrong one".

actually, it would be sheep neutering. but thats only half the story. there is all sorts of stuff on the farm here. if i have to kill wild pigs i need something that will stay very sharp for a longtime. never rust. and be long enough that i dont need to use two stabs to get the job done.

so you need a large blade, 8" or longer?

every knife will rust eventually if you dont take care of it (except titanium, which is out of your price range anyway).

for longer edge holding, i suggest a harder steel, s30v, d2, ats34, etc. 440c might not hold an edge as long as you would like.

do a little browsing here: http://www.1sks.com/store/brands.html

you should get a pretty good idea of what is out there within your price range.

I think a 6" or so KABAR would be good. Those FallKniven knives look fantastic.

Thats what im after! Bark river Canadian Camp knife here i come!
Oh wait its not stainless steel. does anybody make an knife like this in say VG10 or S30V?

Well, that was easy. :)

There are other stocking dealers than DLT, and some might have another handle material that you would prefer. I've heard nothing but good things about DLT, and I personally have had good luck with Knives Ship Free. I'm not sure which Sydney you're in (Australia, BC, etc), but these folks will treat you well. :)

Australia! thanks again for this! i was about to buy a CRKT M60 as i mentioned. how wrong i was!

I personally think that a fixed blade wants to be non-stainless. It holds an edge nicely, is tough and wont rust that easy.

I think that a fallkniven is perfect for you otherwise.
