hey guys, as many of you do i EDC a knife wherever i go. i was dismayed to see that my college campus' rules are

1) blade under 2.5 inches
2) no lock

so i am looking for a knife with these features and

3) one hand opening
4) pocket clip

i could not think of any off the top of my head. i realize a SAK would work but it doesnt have the one hand opening and the pocket clip
EDIT: also no fixed blades, against the rules, and lets try and keep it inexpensive. less than $50 ish. :D
thanks for your time and have a nice day.

Spyderco Urban. One of my favorite knives.

*I guess the blade is 2-9/16ths long....which puts it 1/16th over your limit. But I doubt that'd get you in trouble. I'd carry it. It was specifically made for these restricted situations

The Urban is the closest I can think of. I'd probably carry a vic Cadet or traditional slipjoint in such a situation. Of course, you could always find a different college. :)

A pocket clip is only gonna draw unwanted attention. In this day and time, a college campus is run sort of like a gulag. You don't want some overzealous student with a cell phone calling you in, and a pocket clip is gonna push the chances of that happening to uncomfortable levels. If campus rules do in fact allow you to carry a knife with the dimensions you describe, get a swiss army knife or a bone handled traditional. Something non-threatening. Keep it deep in the pocket and when you go to use it, use your head. No mall ninja blade deployment, no super ariel spins. Just boring old cutting chores.

If you insist on a model with a pocket clip, don't be surprised when campus police has you face down on the concrete. In fact, plan on it.

The non-locking is the biggest killer here. The Spyderco Urban is the only knife that springs to mind that also fills your other criteria. Spyderco is supposed to be releasing some new slippies this year, maybe some of them will also be in this size range.

Have you considered carrying a small fixed blade instead? This would really open up your options (if it's allowed).

I believe that part of the rules comes from state law, one of our CA LEOs can confirm or refute this...

Don't tell anyone, but I carry a SAK Spartan with a too-long blade onto campuses all the time and use it fairly often in the open without problems. The SAK is not a "weapon" in the common view (unlike anything with a swoopy or serrated blade), so no one even thinks about it.

I would suggest a SAK one-handed opener. The main blade may be a bit long, but the one handed feature is convenient as all get out, and these are the least threatening knives possible, much less likely to draw attention than anything else. I would agree with Harry Callahan not to get or use a pocket clip. This will only draw attention. Also, most folks couldn't identify a pocket clip as being anything but a "knife", so you lose the non-threatening feature of the SAK.

well there is state law and each campus makes its own rules.

I would get the urban (bottom one in NDJEEP's pic.), remove the clip and if you feel the need to, sharpen the tip enough to remove the 1/16th of an inch extra.
That or a suitable SAK. I just prefer the spyderco opening hole.

What school? I know state law doesn't mention a blade length restriction for folding knives in CA, even on CSU and UC campuses.

it is a CSU. and this one has some nasty rules. i agree that the urban is looking nice and i suppose i could modify it but i would like to here other opinions. thanks again everyone.

From Ragweed Forge, under $20 shipped:

The EKA Compact is a simple folding knife for lightweight carry. The Sandvik stainless blade is about 2 1/4" long and .075" thick. The knife is about 3 1/2" closed. The handles are plastic, and come in black, yellow, bright red or dark blue. There is a brass lined lanyard hole. It weighs a bit less than 1 1/2 ounces. It's light enough to carry on your keychain, but large enough for a decent grip.
