I'm looking for a short sword with good thrusting ability, but with good cutting ability as well. Basically, a sword not unlike a Roman Gladius with a 20" blade or so. However, I don't want the the sword to be too blade heavy and a good pommel to shift the weight a bit would be nice. It doesn't need to be double bladed and a "little" curvature of the blade is ok......but no recurve. I'd like the weight to be between 2lbs and 2.5lbs.

I want this to be a fully functional sword capable of withstanding a decent amount of shock, and maintaining a good edge(I like to get my edges shaving sharp). I don't want a Japanese styled blade, because I don't want to have to polish it to keep it sharp.....just a standard sharpening edge.

I've looked around a bit, and I've found a couple of sources I wanted to run by you guys. I like the looks of MMHW's Shasqua:

I also see a good selection of swords from Albion:
http://www.albion-swords.com/

However, I wanted to hear some opinions regarding my search for a sword from you all. I guess my concern for MMHW is whether they know what they are doing when it comes to balancing a sword properly and making a grip that stays secure even when sweating. My concerns about Albion is whether they use good materials and if they temper their swords properly to not only hold a good edge, but if they retain enough strength to prevent breakage of the blade and more importantly....the tang and securing of the pommel.

I appreciate any help/advice you all can give me. :D

Have you considered the Busse AK-47? You will not find a tougher sword or better warranty.

www.bussecompanystore.com has them in stock. I am fondling mine as I type :D

That's a good looking sword, however I am wanting one that I will be using primarily as a single handed sword. Looks like the security of the grip on the Busse would not be all that great in single handed use. I am considering the MMHW because it has a cord wrapped grip similar to a Katana grip which I've found to be very secure single handed. That's also why I might consider a Viking styled sword or a Gladius although the Viking sword is about 10" longer than I really want.

If you don't care to pay Albion's prices, which are reasonable if you wish to have the historical accuracy that they highlight, then you might wish to try Kris Cutlery at http://www.kriscutlery.com/. THey have a good reputation for user blades if not for 100% historical accuracy. Their replica of the Roman Pompeii gladius has earned a particularly good reputation.

HMMM? "This item is temporarily out of stock." Good or bad news? I don't know. If you are impatient, their Celtic Sword might be a good alternative.

Not often I like several of a maker's blades. Less often do I like a lot of a maker's blades. Nice styling. I had not seen Mineral Mountain before. Now I am considering a blade or two. That is quite a step for me. The shasqua is rather nice. Paired up with a kerambit....
