I dont have any sharpening equipment and I just got an F1 and M2K. I have other stainless knives in 440 and will be getting something in high carbon.
What stone{s} would you recommend I get to cover my sharpening needs?
Thanks

Option 1: Get a Lansky/Gatco/Sharpmaker. These systems come with all the stones you need.

Option 2: Cheap coarse/fine dual stone from the hardware store. Learning to sharpen freehand takes some time but it's worth it IMO. OTOH I wouldn't want to reprofile a whole lot freehand.

Option 3: Paint stirrers, mousepads, sandpaper and glue. I haven't tried convex sharpening myself but I'm planning to.

As for arkansas/india/japanese/diamond benchstones, I'm sure someone can enlighten both of us. :)

Thanks for the replies. Do you think a fine DMT stone and a course/fine Norton india would be enough of a good variety? I want to spend around $60.

I have used DMT stones for about 10 years now and have yet to wear one out. Your choice should work fine.

After reading more I think something like a spyderco ceramic would be better for finishing the edge?

I'm think I dont want to mess with oil for the india, all dry is more appealing.
How would a course / fine DMT and a fine ceramic work out?
If you could pick 1 or 2 diamond stones and a ceramic stone for the best complete sharpening setup what would you choose?
Maybe just a course DMT and a medium instead of the fine ceramic would be enough? I want to be able to put a good working edge that wont wear away fast so the fine diamond is probably necessary for that? I also want a good slicing edge on some knives for food prep.

Don't forget a pc of leather glued to a flat surface and some stropping compound. Do a search for stropping and there's all kinds of good info available.

Yeah thanks I got the stropping covered, made a paddle and got some green veritas from leevalley. I'm just having trouble narrowing down my choices for the benchstones, I'd like to get it figured out soon as possible so I can order it all together.

I went with a fine diasharp and fine (1200 grit i think) spyderco for now, ill get the course down the road if I find the fine isnt enough.
Do you think this will be too much of a jump between grits? I know thyere very different type of materials. Without something like 800-1000 in between, If i went from a 600 rough diamond to more polishy smooth 1200 ceramic, would this be bad?
