Ok, I'll start off by saying, I like my modern folders, but I've had the want to try out a traditional. I know absolutely know nothing about traditionals so bare with me.
Things I'd like
  • smaller size (2.5 inch blade max)
  • two blades
  • carbon steel preferred
  • Around $35
Once again I don't know that much about traditionals so just ask if you need any answers to some criteria I didn't mention. And I sorry in advanced if this thread has been made before.

Thanks,
Mark

I think the Case Peanut CV in Chesnut Bone looks amazing, plus the Peanut is a fantastic knife in itself.
Give that a try?

I second the vote for a CV Case Peanut in Yellow Delrin or for a few dollars more you could get one with nice jigged bone.

Have a great day,
Jeff

I see the Peanut Cult is out in force tonight.:p

Here's a couple more thoughts about what to look for. If you want a blade that is no larger than 2.5", then you want to stay around 3.5" closed or smaller. Slip joint knives often have a blade that is 3/4" to 1" shorter than the closed length. There are of course some exceptions to this depending on the design of the pattern. The Case Peanut is certainly a fine recommendation, but there are others worth taking a look at. A Case Pen in CV and a Queen Workhorse Canoe or Trapper Jack fit your criteria also. The latter two fall into the upper end of your size restriction, though. Something else to look for is a US made Schrade 33OT.

Good luck in your search and welcome to the Traditional Forum, Mark.

It's time to get serious here.:D
The only real option is the Mini Copperhead.

Unfortunately they are only available in stainless but that hasn't hurt mine one little bit.

Thanks for the info. I'm really liking the peanuts' size. I'll still be carrying my Kershaws, and other modern folders, so I don't need anything too big, just something to use in public areas, without the drama.
I've think I've decided on the "Case Peanut Chestnut Bone CV".

I hope Doug doesn't mind me borrowing his picture.

Peanut is a great choice for a small traditional folder. I've got a couple myself.

The Peanut is dinky, but capable. Personally, I wish they made a single blade peanut, as the clip blade is slim/small enough that the pen blade seems superfluous (seriously, I have a Schatt and Morgan Congress with a "pen" blade as big as the Peanut's main blade).

I think the Sway Back Jack is a far better small knife, but is about double the ~$35 price Mark was looking for. At that price though, I can't think of anything better to suggest than when you ordered, the Peanut in CV and chestnut bone. It's going to be a "gateway" knife though, guaranteed.

I agree that they should have just left the tiny pen blade off the knife.

if we are now talking about peanut sized single blade knives then i have to call out the tiny toothpick style knives. its an absolute 'grandpa' type knife if ever there was one, imho.

There have been a few5/6120s made but they're not too common. There is the zytel one Case is making now. I think they're all in SS though.

Welcome Mark!!!

I know you'll enjoy the 'nut.
Be careful with her. They like to bite, especially if you don't give 'em enough respect.
They have a bit of a napoleon complex.

im a bit confused if you looking for blades the size 2.5 or the handle size 2.5 but got thoughts on both. for handle i would defiantly agree with the cult and say go for the yellow peanut. blades of that size i would say case cv yellow mini trapper, would be in your budget and be pretty versatile. two my favorite pocket knives to carry are these case patterns and would suit most all the tasks i use a knife for.

Mark, you made a good decision. The Peanut is a pretty useful knife. If it is really too small, you can still upgrade to a bigger knife, though I doubt it. The Chestnut Bone CV Peanut is in my pocket regularly.

As others have mentioned, a Yellow Delrin 'nut would also fix the bill - but for the prize you can get a yellow one any time :)
