Recommend me an ultra fine stone for Hapstone R2

I’m currently using a set of Venev Ursa double sided diamond stones on my R2, along with some Jende lapping film. My finest stone is the 1200 grit, which translates to 3 microns. I see that Venev now has a 1500 grit stone (2 micron), but I’m not sure if a 1 micron difference is enough of a progression. Any recommendations for something to use after my current 1200 stone? I have all flavors of steel, from AUS8 to s110v, so I assume that it needs to be diamond or cbn. I’d be willing to try the 1500 Venev if you think that would be useful, otherwise I’m open to any 1x6 stone. Thanks.

I agree, 1200 to 1500 (3 to 2 micron) is not necessary. As you write, the diamond stones are rated in FEPA F. F1200 is ~ 4.000 JIS. Maybe a Naniwa or Suehiro 8.000?
Are you sure, you need a finer stone? 3 micron is already very fine. 4.000 JIS should be more than enough to give you a super sharp edge...

I'm a bit dubious that Venev's 1200 is really 3 microns. I have their 1200 bench stone and I don't think it leaves as shiny a finish as CGSW's (Matrix) 5 micron stone. In any case, I think it's enough to be your last stone. I'd go from there to a progression of strops with diamond compound. Something like 3 micron, 1 micron, .5 micron. Or if you think that Venev stone is 3 micron, do 1, .5, .25 (or .1).

Are these not marked with a micron size, e.g. 7/5 or 5/3? The performance difference observed could be due to the type of binder used, which can have a tremendous effect on the surface roughness produced.
Yep, they are marked 3/2. They claim to be using non-abrasive binder, so it shouldn't be that. It's quite possible the difference is that I use more stones in my progression with the CGSW stones (6 vs 4). Or the Russians could be lying ... who knows? When Venev says they're not going to invade Ukraine I believe them. :)

In the Matrix stones you could go to 2500 and 4000 after your 1200.The 4000 is for polishing as much as anything else. You can tell its cutting for sure, but for everyday use, not really necessary.

I’m pretty sure the matrix stones are using a different grit scale and are actually not quite as fine as the Venev’s. Going to stick with the 1200 and work on my honing skills.

This is true, as illustrated on my grit chart. However as referenced the bond type can potentally have a greater effect, Asahi Diamond indicating that a #400 electroplate and #90 resin bond produce about the same surface roughness. It is NOT implausible for the Diamond Matrix stones to produce a finer surface finish with a coarser grain.
