Recommend Some Computer Speakers?

I just gave my daughter my desktop computer to use at college and went out and replaced it with a decent laptop for myself. The desktop had, I believe, an Altec-Lansing 495 sound package - subwoofer and decent satellite speakers. Is there something of comparable sound quality that I can hook up to my laptop when I use it at home? I was thinking of one of the Sonigistix "Monsoon" systems with "flat" planar satellite speakers and a subwoofer. Anyone have any experience with these? If not - any other recommendations? I want the best - within reason.:)

The best you can get under about $300 is a set by Klipsch. I myself have their 4.1 set and it set me back around $250 when I got it two years back. But just run some searches and you'll see what I mean.

I'm familiar with the impressive Polk speakers for home audio systems, but the only Polk computer speaker system I have seen in stores or on websites looks a bit puny. I also like KLH, but the systems I have seen so far were also far from suitable. If Polk has a website, maybe I'll check it out and see if they offer any top-of-the-line systems for computers.

Thanks for the tip, Nitin. I didn't realize that Klipsch made computer speakers. Of course I am familiar with Klipsch and will check out the 4.1 set you mentioned as soon as possible. My budget is pretty much open - I can't imagine a set of computer speakers (subwoofer and satellites) going for more than $400 or $500.

Peter Aczel's The Audio Critic did a article on the Monsoon calling the speakers the best speakers for under $1000 dollars or something like that...unfortunately only for listening in the nearfield. I am unused to thinking of the PC as a High-end listening system but perhaps I should start? BTW, Aczel is a well-known debunker of audio BS, he is a scientist and engineer and has called some really expensive stuff, expensive crap.

Thanks so much. This is exactly the info I was looking for. And yes, I'm only interested in the "nearfield" sound quality, ie. while sitting at my laptop at my desk. I'm not looking for a system to replace my "music" set up. I have two complete Bose sound systems that take care of my modest listening requirements while in my office.

Get some Cambridge soundworks speakers with the subwoofer. I only paid 100 dollars for mine, and they are really great, they sound better then my home stereo system. For the money, i dont think you can beat them.
