I have been living in Nevada for going on three years now and plan to be here for many years to come and I have a confession to make:eek:. I have hiked, climbed, and swam here in Nevada and I have yet to learn any of the plants, animals, or basic survival skills of the desert. I have read the army survival guides section on desert survival and learned the basic plants but that is about it. I spent the first 20 years of my life learning to survive in the woods of northern Michigan, in the snow and cold yet my desert skills are almost non-existent other than learning to drink more water and move in early morning or late day. I just ordered Scats and Tracks of the Desert Southwest and Flowers and Shrubs of the Mojave Desert but would like some recommendations.

Edit: I have added these books to buy later. Cacti, Agaves, and Yuccas of California and Nevada, Medicinal Plants of the Desert and Canyon West,
Surviving the Desert (Simply Survival: Greg Davenport's Books for the Wilderness).

I have to double-check, but I think this was a college textbook for our desert survival class. Maybe not as Nevada-specific as you're looking for, but lots of general American desert information including plants, animals, insects, geology, prehistory and history, climate and weather...

Try anything by Tony Nestor. The old classic is "Outdoor Survival Skills" by Larry Dean Olsen.

I am a big fan of Greg Davenports books. He is an excellent instructor and offers a lot of information and he has a lot of experience in the field. He has a series of books dealing with different environments.

Just added Surviving the Desert (Simply Survival: Greg Davenport's Books for the Wilderness) to the list thanks for the recommendation.

Cody Lundin's books are somewhat geared for desert conditions since his school and home base is in Arizona.
