Hi,

I'll slowly be expanding my knives to traditionals over the next year or so and was wondering what GEC models are a must to eventually own or at least check out. Also I've been looking at GEC stag models a lot, but the stag handles are pretty much a hit or miss for me. Some models having very even stag in regards to thickness, but unaesthetic looking finish on the stag. On the flip side, I've found models with great extremely attractive looking stag, but slightly uneven handles. That said I want to see examples of stag done right by GEC and what the handles look like after a lot of edc.

Thanks,
BN

Five of my favorite GEC patterns are:

#76
#66
#68
#33
#25

But frankly there are several more I would add, including the #47, #55, and the ever popular #15. GEC makes many fine patterns.

Of course, the 15. I'd say a 23 or 73. A stockman, my favorite is the 82 dixie.

Here's my only stag, I am more picky than most about stag I'd say and I really like this one:

I'm particularly partial to (in order):

#66 Jacks & Calf Roper
#15 TC and all the other iterations
#85 Teardrop (Classic)
#92 Eureka
#71 Rugged Bullnose (Micarta) is outstanding

Happy hunting!

Slowly....over the next year. Yeah, good luck with that. :D
As for the patterns I think they've all been covered but I'll repeat few. The 15, 25, 57, 66 and 76 are all favorites. Sorry I don't own a single GEC knife in stag. That is until the forum knife arrives late this year. Good luck and welcome to the madness that is GEC.

my vote: 15, 47, 78, 85, and 92.

(this thread reminds me of the reading of lottery numbers)

15 - my work knife (harness jack)
55 houndstooth or 57 (half whitt)
66 - my small knife
73 - like the 15, everybody needs one
61 Half congress is My sleeper.

no stags

I can't believe that I left my #47 viper and #48 Diamond Jack off the list

In my estimation the 15 and 73 are essential.

Others which I personally like are the 76, 66 and 56 in no particular order.

Pic of my trusty stag 73 attached, which has been my 'weekend' knife since I received it. It has seen some hard yakka and held up well, I think the stag has got better with age as the high ridges have lost the bark and smoothed out.

The #73 is one of GEC's oldest patterns. It remains among their best.

I don't have any stag but my top 5 GEC's would have to be:

25 single blade
66
15 single blade
55/57 single spring versions
61 single spring

I'd echo these sentiments. Really like the GEC 66 Slim and the 6 White Owl. Carry the little 25 a great deal.
The only stag one I have and I am the second owner. I don't like stag as much as some other patterns, but sometimes it just calls to you. This one did.

The 73 pattern is one that every GEC fan should own. It is their Buck 110 if you will.

The 15 pattern is so versatile and such a great little knife, I don't think anyone could go wrong with this pattern, jack or barlow.

The 74 pattern is just right for a working knife, especially the 74 BFC forums style pattern with clip and wharncliff.

The 72 lockback is an amazing lockback alternative to the 73 pattern.

The 81 is the big stockman I've been waiting for from GEC, and they nailed it.

ALL stag will have slightly uneven thickness. They are natural materials that have curves and then are hand sanded to thickness by humans.

I am not trying to be difficult, but stag is one of those handle materials you just have to be ok with not having everything perfectly symmetrical. It is great stuff, just not perfectly even.
