I have always enjoyed the woods, and living in the Blue Ridge Mountains certainly gives me an awesome place to roam. Lately my knife collection has been drifting to survival and woods blades but my skill level is very low. It has been a long time since boy scouts. I want to get out there and start practicing surviving in the woods and not the short hikes and hunting trips I have done in the past.

I have been trying out things I learn in videos and books, but it is no substitute to hands on training. Plus there is just so many voices, opinions and methods that it can be confusing. At this point I just want simple and effective.

I'd prefer to not travel too far, and would like to get experience in the type of environment I live in first.

Can anyone recommend someone teaching wilderness survival in my area? I live in the north western part of NC, but VA is a few miles away and TN is about an hour away.

I have found a few places from looking online, but I am hoping some of you would have first hand experience.

a second for mountain shepherd. it's been some years, but humble thunder for me and then wild comfort (i think that's right - weekend course for kids and parents) for my son (and me) were great! it's a good place to start and close to you.

I have had some classes and sent my kids to Summer camp at the Living Earth School in VA. Great people to deal with and a lot of fun.
