I have been looking at HI khukuris for quite some time and think it's time I get one. So are there any that you experts can suggest? What model should be on everyones belt. Thanks for any info.
Nick

I believe the 15in Ang Khola is the best seller, with the British Army Service (15in) coming in at no. 3 and then possibly the 18inch Ang Khola or the 15in WWII khukuree...

It's probably pretty hard to go wrong - but I'd recommend one of those three types - Ang Khola, British Army Service or WWII. And 15 or 18 inch is probably the best size. Later, once you've caught true HIKV you can start buying larger and smaller models.

I'm sure there'll be a whole host of people here with more suggestions. You may just have to buy three or four ;)

You can see some more photos of a couple of different types of HI khukurees on my kukri-gallery site (listed below), one of them is the BAS (if I had it to do over, I might be tempted to get a 15inch WWII - very similar to the BAS but the handle's a bit longer I believe--but I'm quite fond of my BAS, my 1st HI khukuree).

And - Welcome to the Cantina Nick :)

Ben

Welcome to the Cantina, Nick. I can only echo what Beo said. We all have our favorites, but really anything in the 15" or 18" size will be a good start. If you want a chopper the Ang Khola or BGRS are both great. For a more machete like knife, a sirupati or Gelbu Special would be good. The BAS and WWII are more "all around" khukuris, they'll do anything well, but can be beat at any specific task by another style, IMO. It all depends on what your gonna use it for. :)

WHAT BEO AND MATT SAID,I HAVE THE 18" AK FOR HEAVEY STUFF (GO BLADE),THE 16.5 WW2 MODEL TO SHOW AND THE 15" BAS FOR ALL AROUND CARRY AND USE.EITHER WAY THEY'LL BE USED SOMETIME OR ANOTHER.TAKE U'R PICK.DECIDE WHAT U'R GOING TO USE IT FOR AND GO FROM THERE.I COULDN'T DECIDE AND BOUGHT ALL THREE.NOT ALL AT THE SAME TIME. FRANK:D

Well I just got my first real khuk and it was an 18" sirupati. Now I just can't seem to put the guy down, it practically follows me everywhere. It quickly became my favorite. I wanted a sirupati from the start because of the shape. So pick one you would like to have and i doubt you'd be dissapointed.

Welcome to the Cantina Nick :)

If your going to do alot of moving around or walking, while you carry your khukuri, then get a BAS. If it's just going to get pulled out from it's home under the truck seat on ocassion, then go with a 15" Ang Khola or a 16" WWII. Light weight ease-of-carry versus all-around practical.

Welcome, Nick.

HI forum is full of kind and gentle guys to help those who want. I'm just curious about how many khukuris do "what to buy" thread starters own now...

I think the best first khuk is the BAS. It's got the classic shape plus it's one of the most affordable in the 15" class. Decent size and weight.

Don't forget the hooflex :)

Thanks for all the input guys. I think I am gonna go with the 15" Ang Khola. I see that there is a place to order from but I want to make sure I get horn handles. What is the best way to do that? Talk to Bill?
Thanks again
Nick

Nick - I think the 15 AK is a good choice for a 1st khukuree - and no worries because it's sure to carry a strain of HIKV which will have you back for more ;)

And it'll fly today.

The 15" AK is always a good one to start with -- more of those in the field than any other.

Thanks Bill can't wait to get it. I hope I don't get HIVK, I already have HIVMT.

Good choice Nick! No matter which one you get, you'll want more--there are just too many cool styles to choose from:D

Remember though it is tradition here that you MUST post a field report/first impression post when you get your first one! It usually provokes into reminiscing about our first khuk, and then we have to go to the closet/under the bed/behind the truck seat (you get the idea) and get that first baby out and hold it, caress it...Oh heck I've gotta go...:D

Well my new khukuri arrived bright and early today. First things first, Bill how did you get it here so fast? Ok but now for my initial thoughts. This is one well made piece, after seeing on Bills sight what kind of conditions and equipment the makers are using I can't believe the quality. How do they get an old truck spring to polish up like this? The sheath is also very well put together and well thought out, I guess a couple of hundred years making them helps. All in all I am very happy with this purchase and Bill's service was fantastic. Somebody hide my wallet because I can see myself lurking here more often waiting for one of the "specials". Also thanks for all the input again guys.
