Hi

I want to buy one quality hatchet for processing firewood in the camp or at home for my fire pit. Needs to be able to chop, split, drive tent pegs etc. Since I will only ever get one, I'm willing to spend some $. I'm the sort of guy who really likes excellent tools even when an average one would do the job. For example, I would be willing to get a Gransfors Bruk at $112 but what else might you guys recommend before I actually decide. Not dying to spend $100 if there is something just as good for $50.

Maybe even high quality vintage? Plumb?

Thanks

Steve

Finding a vintage head would be the way to go if you can and just rehandle it yourself. I owned a GB wildlife hatchet for awhile and it was certainly a great hatchet, but I did sell it after I got an old Collins hatchet head. If I were buying a new one in that price range I would be considering the Council Tool Hudson Bay on the 18" handle. or the Husqvarna hatchet is a pretty good deal too.

Check out Wetterlings. Their cheapest model is like 80ish. Other than GB and Wetterlings I have heard Condor and Eastwing make decent hatchets for the price.

I cannot suggest a fiskars enough. Their small hatchet (x7 i think) is great. Holds one hell of an edge and is sharpened easily. You can get it sharp enough to shave with because that's how mine stays. I have had it for years, i keep it in my truck and pack at all times. I now own 3 gransfors but the fiskars will always hold a place in my pack, its my ugly-but-stupidly-sharp beautiful baby. Oh and btw gerber is NOT a fiskars, make sure it says finland on the head or no dice.
