Hello- I'm thinking of putting together a small collection of Buck Knives that will someday go to one of my very young Grand children. I recently finished a collection of Uncle Henry USA Schrade + Lock Backs for another Grand child and I had a lot of fun putting it together. I carried a Buck Lock back that I loved while in the navy a long, long time ago and thought a nice (but small) collection of Bucks would be fun and a nice thing to leave behind for the newest little guy. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Buck knives are date coded for year of manufacture. Put together a set of Buck knives all having the same date code as the childs birth year.

I began collecting for the very same reason, to have something with sentimental value to pass to my grandsons. Be warned, collecting Bucks can become addicting. :)

Small can be a relative term. A collection of 110's from 1964 to your grandson's year of birth would be nice but those early models can be very expensive. I think DesotoSky's idea is good. Get together a collection of as many different Buck models as you can, coinciding with his year of birth, throw in a few limited editions from the same year if possible of one specific model (the 110 maybe), and you will have a nice collection.

Welcome to the buck forum. Enjoy your time here.

Here is a Buck date code card to aid your enjoyment and our friend from St Louis has another grand idea, as usual:

It wasn't an original idea. The idea of gifting kids birth year knives has come up before.

Yes, I have some from the years my sons were born and a few which belonged to my Father. I think the birth year thing is the way to go, should be able to do it at a fair price and they will be able to use them without the twinge that may come from using a more rare and expensive version.

Thanks all !! I really appreciate your ideas. I think that I'm going to put together a set of a dozen various 110 lockbacks, including a birth year one (terrific idea). Any suggestions for specific models ?

I'll post progress reports, with pictures, as I start to acquire pieces. Thanks again !!!

I would think a small collection of classic Buck knives would be cool; maybe three each from the 100 series fixed blade, the 300 series pocketknives, Buck 110 with and without fingergrooves and a Buck Lite or two, and of course a 124 to fill the Bowie Knife slot. OH

Thank you- I'm going to do the Old Hunter collection with a 112 added. I'm not familiar with any Bucks other than the 110 so I'll be doing some research on models, vintage, availability etc. so I'd like to (Humbly) ask if there are some links that you could recommend that will help me educate myself.

Thanks & my Best

Uncleman, sounds like you are in for some fun putting this collection together. Here are a few representative photo's; the first is of a Buck 301 - a classic pocketknife (all 300 series knives are variations of this style). Next is a 118, the 100 series fixed blade knives are outdoors/hunting knives - most will be variations of this knife - bigger or smaller with differing blade configurations. You are already familiar with the 110/112 folders. Have fun! OH

Here are some catalog pictures from 1985 of the 300 and 100 series to assist you; these and many others have been posted on this forum over the years (a search may yield more for you). OH
