Im looking for a good quaility coarse grit waterstone(220-320 perhaps?)? Or would a coarse grit DMT dia-Sharp be a good alternative? if that would it be an issue jumping from a coarse grit DMT stone to a 800 grit waterstone? Thanks
Also, this is mostly for carbon steels and plane blades..

Nubatama 220 bamboo (pink brick) would be my choice and a good starting point for premium coarse waterstones.

What brand 800 do you have? King?

Then how much cutting power are you looking for?
What condition are the edges to be ground?
Do you plan on upgrading the whole set or just looking a coarse stone?

We can easily fixed damaged edges in the shop as far as that(but still not bothering to resort to the belt over a small nick)..Dont need a great deal of cutting power, these stones are for mostly personal use..
We do plan on upgrading from the King stones..Just havent done it yet..Thinking about shapton pros? maybe..Thanks for your time..

I have a Norton 220 and the King (Sun King) 240. Both are silicon carbide, the King works very well and is much faster and harder than the Norton. The 800 King easily makes the transition.

Google 220 king stone, as HH mentioned it will make a nice transition to the 800 plus its about half the price of my first recommendation.

Shaptons are very good and much faster at removing steel but the king stones work very well with carbon steels and cutting tools with wide bevels.
